The Student Room Group

Drama at Cambridge

Hello!

I am an international student and will be a postgrad at King's this fall. I was just wondering if it was possible for students to take classes outside their course. I'm doing the MPhil Management course but would love to take drama or music classes. Would I be allowed to take those classes or participate in any of the theatre groups in Cambridge?

Also, I would really appreciate it if someone could talk about the different theatre groups in the university. I'd love to learn more and join one! :p:

Thanks!
You won't be able to take formal drama classes as such but there is a LOT of student run stuff you'd be able to get involved with. The same goes for music but I'll focus on the drama as that's my thing.

Try these websites for more info...

This is a site run by students which brings information on all the theatre going on in Cambridge into one place. The best bits for new people are the "Infobase" which is like a small wiki on Cambridge drama and the "shows" section which shows a neat timeline of all forthcoming student shows. The "vacant positions" pages are good for seeing the opportunities available right now though most of the (particularly acting) opportunities for next term won't have been put on there yet.

The Amateur Dramatic Club (ADC) is the university's biggest drama society and this is their website. Other drama societies exist though, mostly tied to individual colleges. The "Get Involved" section has a lot of information which applies to all university theatre, not just ADC shows.

This is the university's own theatre which puts on solely student productions during term-time. Right now it's undergoing building work to improve facilities but will be open again when term starts. Even though it's quite small it's equipped to a very high standard so we're extremely lucky to have it. As you'll see on Camdram, a lot of stuff also happens in colleges' own venues.

I'm thinking of writing a wiki page on this as it tends to come up fairly often.
