Great to have this forum. I have just been accepted, by email so far, through Clearing to the Henley Business School for a BSc. I am just waiting to get the formal confirmation for my clearing choice on UCAS before looking for accommodation. I am just worried that I might be too late to get a room in on Campus Halls. Are there likely still to be rooms available? I wasn't clear if the accommodation guarantee also applies to those who make their choice through Clearing.

Hey @SHawUni!

Congratulations on your offer, that's great news!!

We have spoken to the accommodation team, and they confirmed that as long as you apply before August 1st, you will be included in the accommodation guarantee. So you should be absolutely fine to get accommodation  The only people who aren't covered by that are people who don't put Reading as their first choice.

If you have any questions about accommodation options or anything else, please let us know! Hope this helps.

For second year students who choose to return to halls individually, will they be allocated in a flat with other second years/returners rather than first years?

Hey @Anonymous

I believe it is most likely that you will be with other returning students, as they tend to try and put all first years together where they can due to the differing experiences you have in your first year. However, if you knew someone in first year that you would like to be with then this may be able to be requested.

I would advise double checking with the accommodation team, but as far as I'm aware, typically returning students are put together where possible I believe. You can contact the team for better advice via [email protected] or +44 (0) 118 200 5011.

Hope this helps!

Ok thanks. Also do most returning students arrive later as they don’t need to be there for welcome week/freshers week, hence the flats with returning students fill up more closer to the start of term/classes?

Hey!

I think this totally depends on the person, honestly, as some people like to settle in a bit before term starts and/or attend some freshers events, whereas others prefer the slightly longer break. So it really depends on your preference, but just be aware, you may still be given/ asked to choose a specific move in time even as a returning student, to help stagger the amount of people moving in at one time.

Hope this helps!

Hi, I'm trying to decide which hall is best for me! I would like a self-catered hall with an en-suite bathroom, and I'd like to not be too far from Reading's town centre/high street. Right now I'm deliberating over St George’s Hall, Sherfield Hall, Benyon Hall and Greenow House, but I'm unsure which one would be best for me.

Hey @Ako01,
All great choices! I myself stayed in Greenow House and really enjoyed it, but its closer to the main campus rather than the town centre which worked for me - I would recommend Benyon or St George's in terms of proximity to town. Though both are in different areas, they have similar proximity to town and campus both on foot and by bus. I would encourage you to check out our locations and en-suite virtual tours hub to help you make your choice! Are there any other requirements you have for your accommodation e.g. social life, price, etc?

Hi. I asked this as a new discussion, but perhaps best to ask here. Wessex Hall - is there any space under the bed? Also - advise over what to take to halls please. Thanks.

Hey @maktoub2000

I recently answered a very similar question about Wessex (not sure if this was your question!), so I hope this might be helpful?
Please see this thread and let me know if you have any more questions about what to bring etc. I'm not 100% sure on space under the bed, but I think there is as there was in Bridges when I was in first year, so assume it's similar storage wise for other halls too!

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Firstly, thank you for setting up this thread which is very useful!

As a quick intro, I’ll be a new post-grad Masters student starting in Sept 2023. I am seeking en-suite accommodation on Campus in Halls, but it appears all rooms on Campus have gone. Is there anyone online who already has a room in Halls and is looking to cancel their contract for their room?

Thanks,
Bhavika
Hey everyone,
I hope you're all doing well! I'm reaching out because I'm facing a little hiccup with my room allocation at Sherfield Hall, and I could use some advice or assistance from those who might have been through a similar situation.
So here's the deal: My family friend and I didn't get rooms in the same flat at Sherfield Hall. We reached out to the accommodation office, and they mentioned that the rooms are provisional and can only be changed if someone cancels their contract.
If any of you have been in a similar situation or have any tips on how to navigate this, please share your experiences or advice. It would mean a lot to me and my friend as we were really hoping to be in the same flat.
Feel free to drop any suggestions or insights here, or you can DM me if you prefer. Your help and support would be greatly appreciated!

Hey @Meet Sonani

So sorry this has happened.

Well done for being proactive and reaching out to the accommodation team but sorry things haven't worked out so far. It may be worth putting a similar message on the University of Reading Freshers 2023-24 facebook page, as I know this is where a lot of new students post about accommodation and such!

If you have any questions that we may be able to help with, please do let us know! Really hope things get sorted for you.

Hi Skye,

Thank you for your continued support and understanding. Unfortunately, posting in the Freshers group hasn't yielded any leads so far. Additionally, not being able to live with my friend is a significant concern, as we've already made arrangements together like splitting our shopping, and it would be quite challenging to live in different flats at this point.

Considering the circumstances, what should our next steps be?

Best regards,
Meet Sonani

Hi @Meet Sonani,
This is a bit of a tricky one, I can empathise with your frustration! Unfortunately posting in the Freshers groups can sometimes be a bit of a waiting game, especially due to the volume of posts uploaded each day. I had a few friends who also came to uni together but lived in different flats by their own choice - although I can completely understand your perspective, I think it could turn out to be a good thing as you will be socialising with other people in your flat and will always have your friend to visit in a different space if you need to!

Though I'd like to reassure you that it doesn't mean your plans are completely off the table. Although our halls are fairly large, it is still entirely feasible that you can do your shopping together, walk to seminars together, and spend plenty of time in each other's flats as accommodation within the same building is often fairly close together - it's likely you'll only be a few corridors or floors away from each other! In my first year I was on the ground floor of my accommodation and had several friends on the fourth, and they were only 2 minutes walk away - we still did everything together, but having the separation in terms of space was really handy if things got overwhelming for us or we just wanted to go somewhere different. In terms of what you should do next, my best advice would be to try and think of the positives of not being in the exact same flat, and make plans with each other for when you do move in if nobody does cancel their contract. I would keep monitoring the Freshers and accommodation threads and forums, and maybe consider speaking to a flatmate when you do move into your accommodation about swapping contracts.

I hope this has helped- please do let us know if you have any other questions!
Best of luck,
Kat

Hey @Anonymous,
Unfortunately we don't have access to the demographical information of our halls as each application is protected by data protection, but I would encourage you to check out the Freshers pages on Facebook to find the group chats for the accommodation you're staying in and see if you can find out there! Obviously we tend to have more home student applicants at UoR, but we still get a fair many international students and each hall tends to be a mix of both home and international students
Hope this helped,

Is Mackinder hall a very party/drinking heavy hall? As I will be staying there for my 2nd year so wanted to know if it could be distracting from my work or not…
Hey I recieved my confirmation of a place and I logged into the RISIS portal but couldnt make an application for accommodation yet.
It says it still "processing my clearing application" and should expect an email letter from accommodation
Is that a different email than the other accommodation email that told me my username and password?
