MRES Masters of Research, did/do you enjoy it?

Hi, i am a mature student soon to be starting a MRES and i am wondering if you enjoyed doing research? Where did it lead after, PhD or doing research in another capacity. Interested to know past and present students thoughts😊

I'm starting BCU MRes in Life Sciences this year did you enjoy it?
I’m currently doing my MRes, personally I thought it was okay. Since I’m intercalating from another country the experience was definitely an eye-opening and humbling one. Although, I didn’t really enjoy the course I was doing/it wasn’t what I expected it to be. I also felt my project was very clinical-based of which I have very little experience (back at home we don’t start interacting in rounds until Year 5). So I think I ended up both learning a lot but also stressing out a lot too. Its weird because most people say its supposed to be easier than medical school, but it has been anything but for me. If I could do it again, I’d probably do an MRes in a different field or even do an entirely different degree from a non-medical field (always wanted to do something along the lines of health policy or politics). Also, I’d probably manage my time better too.

In terms of how I view research, well I have mixed feelings. But I will not major in the same field for my PhD, if ever I should apply or even qualify for one. I’d probably do another masters in a field I enjoy (initially I thought the MRes I was doing would be similar, but as it turns out it was so very different). I’d also choose to go to a university that specialises in the area that I am interested in. But yeah, there were definitely times when I would scoff at going down the research track because of the impression I got from my MRes. But then I also had past experiences working in other research projects and placements, and they had only encouraged me to pursue research/very positive experiences. So I’m glad I still have those to base of my experience with research to. I would assume people with bad experiences will avoid research since an MRes is be their only point of contact. Hope this would help those who need to hear it.
