Boring first year

Ok I made a big mistake commuting and I’m telling you I didn’t go to one social event😭😭😭. Not once clubbing not one society event and I feel like such a loser. Commuting made it really hard as events are usually at night so after lectures I’d just go home. It’s been really depressing especially seeing all the tik toks insta stories etc and 2nd and 3rd year is probs gonna be the same. I feel like uni supposed to be real fun, but I’m just being stingy saving money and having a boring life. Any suggestions pls.

Move into halls in your second year. I can sympathise. I commute as well and it’s been the most mind numbingly boring experience of my life. I am in second year and my course is still mainly online.

Wish I had never bothered and done an apprenticeship. Going to university was the worst mistake of my life.

Did you commute first year as well? Do you think it’s worth the money cos I’m starting to feel it is worth it now. And exactly it’s been so boring!
Hello,
I would agree that generally, I think it's best for students to live near their uni as it gives them an opportunity to experience living independently and craft an identity of your own. It also gives you an opportunity to better take advantage of the university's services and social aspects. You sound like you've had a rough time, and I would really recommend moving closer to your uni, particularly in halls, for next year if possible.

You've mentioned saving money, but if you've got a loan I would say it's worth the money, even for your own mental health's sake. Some people can definitely manage commuting, but it may just not be a good option for you if you're sociable and want to take part in the uni's community more. You're also probably losing a lot of time on the commute itself that could be allocated to all kinds of other things. Are there any other reasons for why you haven't moved close to the university? I understand that everyone has their own needs, so I can see if that isn't an option for you.

Hey:smile:

I can understand the position you are in, understandably it feels like you are missing out on your university experience.

Is it possible for you to move into halls next year? if so, i would seriously consider this! It sounds like moving to university would give you the experience you really want.

If you are worried about money, dont forget you can access a student loan and i believe applications are opening soon

I hope this helps and i hope you find a resolution.

All the best

I commutes in first year as I only went onto campus 20 times in first year. It hasn’t been worth a single penny.

Hi, I hope you’re well!

I can agree it might be hard for you to get involved in socialising at uni if you’re commuting. If you feel as though you would get more out your experience by living away from home whilst studying I’d say, it’s never too late! You can always find some accommodation in your upcoming year, you can discuss this with student finance to see how much loan you could get. I think it will totally be worth if that’s what you’re looking for. Even if you choose not to, I would suggest joining a society of some kind, maybe even get talking with the people in your classes - make a group chat! That way you can suggest nights out or other plans and see what everyone else is up to and perhaps get involved that way.

Wishing you all the best,
Ellie

I was in halls first year and lived the same life as the OP. Second year hasn't been any different, and it won't get better in the future either.
Hi! You could see if there are any day-time events at yout uni and go with some friends from your course - there may be more events happening in the day time when it is summertime. Otherwise you could find a society you are interested in and see if they have an evening event on a day you have lectures and stay in the evening to go to it. Another option is to research your university and see if they have a commuters society or try and connect online with other commuting students and go to an event together. Hope this helps!
