LGBTQ+ Support

Hello everyone, this is the LGBTQ+ Network and we’d like to talk through some of what’s available to LGBTQ+ students at Staffordshire University!

First off there is us! the LGBTQ+ Network, we’re a student lead network that looks to provide a space for socialising and also a place to learn- we also do our best to push for progress to improve the experiences of LGBTQ+ Students. Some of what we do includes 2 events throughout the week- a Tuesday 101 educational/discussion session in T005 of Beacon Building and a Friday social session in verve, we also organise events like the TDOR (transgender day of remembrance) walk, the LGBTQ+ history month movies, and the clothing swap.

One new thing we have introduced is a ‘transition fundraiser’ where transgender students can approach the network if they have need for something gender affirming (a binder, new wardrobe, make up, first private appointments) and the network will try to raise money for them, we also run a ‘binder bucket’ where those who have no need for a binder can donate and we give it to someone who needs one.

As for outside of the network there are pronoun pins including, she/her, he/him, they/them as well as a blank badge that can be filled in with a pen, these are available on campus in the student union building, most staff have been given some LGBTQ+ inclusiveness training and name changes on student cards and blackboard are accessible fairly easily. There are also gender-neutral bathrooms available in most all university buildings, the university was also one of the first to have a transgender inclusion policy which we are currently updating as well as having rainbow lanyards available so people can express themselves or their support for LGBTQ+ people!

There are also other networks like the Racial and Cultural inclusion Network, the Disabled Network and The Women’s Network who the LGBTQ+ Network work closely with, we all recognise that so many students are more than just ‘one thing’ and value learning and organising with each other.
Hopefully there will be a LGBTQ+ society! Would love to join
