The term LGBTQ wasn't "invented" per se.... but the phrase was started to be used in the late 20th Century.

It originally was just LGB to describe lesbians, gay guys and bisexuals, but later became LGBT at some point in the early 21st century to include transsexual / transgender people. later the term was modified to include the Q term... and more recently the "+" sign. Don't be surprised if in a few years it's been modified into something else.

Well the "Q" can mean either queer or questioning, depending on who you speak to. It's often used to describe anyone who isn't conventionally straight... so can also include someone who is pansexual, asexual etc.

The original meaning of "Queer", literally means strange or unusual, although it became used as a slur against homosexuality. The LGBTQ community have taken this word back to describe themselves, in much the same way some black people have taken back the "N" word.
