Official Lancaster University Postgraduate applicants 2023

SL_LancsUni_Jun22_SLV_2422_HR.jpg

Every year, Lancaster University enrols over 2000 postgraduate students. The vast majority of those are taught, or by research, Master's students. You can imagine then, that that makes for a vibrant, diverse community, from a variety of backgrounds.

Master's students studying full-time will typically live on campus or close by in Lancaster city, while our part-time and distance, or blended-learning students can combine their studies with living anywhere in the world.

We go to great lengths to foster a strong postgraduate community, so that alongside your studies, you still have opportunities to network, socialise, join clubs and societies, and generally maximise your time with us.

We accept applications to our programmes year round, while each programme will have its own closing date for applications, so be sure to check with the course directors or admissions tutors.

Our list of current postgraduate programmes can be found here: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/postgraduate-courses/

Postgraduate students have a range of concerns very different from those of applying undergraduate students, so we have a number postgraduate students working on The Student Room. They are here to answer any and all questions about studying and life at Lancaster University.

So don't be shy! Begin your journey to postgraduate study at Lancaster University today.

Hi everyone! My name is Tineke and I'm starting my PhD in Physics this academic year. I also completed my undergraduate degree (integrated master's - MPhys Physics) here, so I should be well equipped to answer any queries about student life at Lancaster  And of course, if I don't know the answer I'll pass on your queries to our teams and endeavour to find the answer for you. So any query big or small don't be afraid to ask, there are no silly questions!

In my spare time, I have been involved in Doctor Who society and cricket. I was also a member of Furness college and will now be in Grad college - the college on campus specifically for postgraduates! My home town is in Merseyside which is conveniently only about an hour and a half away

It would be great if postgraduate applicants could introduce themselves here. I find that it is really reassuring to connect with others in similar situations to you before starting. Here are some suggested ways to introduce yourself:

What can we call you?
What are you interested in studying/researching?
Where are you from?
Are there any societies that you'd like to get involved in or any hobbies you like to do in your spare time?

I'm looking forward to hearing from you

Hi Tineke
Daughters going into her 4th year of integrated physics masters and shes interested in applying for a phd there herself. When you joined grad college, did you go back on campus to stay? Or did you stay in the city? Shes weighing up her options as to which is best for her.

Hello, different ambassador but I thought I would input something as a fresh postgraduate because I have just finished my bachelors and am heading into a masters myself (in Literature though).

Personally, I'm staying in the city for my masters because I like the commute onto campus. Campus is great if you want walks in the countryside or a strictly student atmosphere, but I found town after a year on campus to be an overall better experience for me personally. Graduate College is south of campus with Lonsdale and Cartmel, so it would feel a lot more homely/village-like than a central college, so you would want to consider that as well.

That said, campus contains all the essentials you would need and with the Sainsburys and Sugar bus it's easy to get into town for shopping and social nights. I'd say it's really up to preference because both are enjoyable experiences.

Tineke will probably give you a more in depth response about how graduate college works but I hope this helps nonetheless!

Thanks Dom. She did 1st year on campus, years 2 and 3 in the city, year 4 will be at Chancellors, and shes currently on campus in summer accommodation there. I think she will try and weigh up convienience of city living and having shops and bars close by, versus the convienience of having the library and facilities close by if she lives on campus.
Hi how long does it usually take for the postgraduate admissions to make a decision? I finished the application almost 5 weeks ago now and still nothing. I don't want to rush the process at all but my second choice uni (Lancaster being my first choice) accepted me a while ago and are now pushing me to make a decision and their offer will expire shortly. I just don't want to reject them and then miss out on both if Lancaster say no. I really don't want to be annoying but is it worth sending an email to the admissions to ask for an update?

I don’t know about the postgrad but undergrad was around 4-5 week mark before they got back. And it depends on what department too. Personally I’d email them on the progress if your application. If you have a deadline on another place it’s definitely worth the ask.

Hi there,

I'm just finishing my postgraduate degree at Lancaster in Mechanical Engineering, I've really enjoyed studying here. I received my offer through last year on the 2nd of August so it's about the right time to receive an offer. It did take a while to come through and I sent them an email chasing up my application which is when they sent my offer through. It's definitely worth sending your department an email to chase up your application as that could help you get more information.

Best of luck and let me know if you have any questions
