Nottingham or Lancaster

Hi, I currently hold medicine offers from both Lancaster and Nottingham. I've visited both, and like both for different reasons. They're both very nice campuses, but Nottingham seems to have a better nightlife (if not a bit of a rougher place), and the hospitals seem better for teaching medicine. However Lancaster seems to have a closer community and focus on the students, as well as being in a nicer, if a bit more isolated, area.

If anyone has experience with either, advice would be appreciated.

I guess it depends what matters to you more - nightlife and area or better support? For me, I’d pick the option with better support, but then I’m very boring and don’t like clubbing so it wouldn’t factor into my decision!

I will say I’ve heard some not-so-good things about the support at Nottingham, which may or may not be true. You can see more about it on Reddit if it’s something you’re interested in reading.

Hi there,

I don’t have experience with a medicine degree but I have been studying at Lancaster for the past 4 years so I can give some input on what it’s like to study here. Lancaster is definitely quite a small city so if nightlife is important then it’s potentially not the choice for you. We have 3 main nightclubs in town which are good fun for a night out but potentially get a bit repetitive if you go out regularly. We have around 7 bars on campus so the casual nightlife is quite nice on campus, especially in summer when you can sit out in the sun, however for a ‘clubbing’ night out, you would have to head into town.

In terms of academic support, I have felt very supported throughout my entire degree. I’m not sure if that’s thanks to my department (I did a Natural Sciences BSc) or due to the fact that it’s a smaller university so the community feels quite tight knit. I have felt very welcomed here and have loved Lancaster. Also, if you’re after other activities, the Lake District is very close by (you can get there by bus), as is the beach at Morecambe. Manchester and Liverpool are also fairly easy to get to by train which is nice for a day trip.

Best of luck with your choices and let me know if you have any questions
