Working whilst studying

Hey, I'm moving to Durham in September to study. My family live ages away and I was under the impression that we had to get lost during the holidays. Does anyone actually have a job that allows them that much holiday? Or do students just have to keep leaving and reapplying for work as they come and go after the summer/Christmas/Easter break? Thanks!

Hello @Nia1960I am a student myself, studying MSc Psychology. As a flexible, part time job that pays extremely well and allows you to accept or deny jobs (perfect for when assingments / exams become alot!) I do TV extra and background work. The money is excellent meaning you only need to work about 2 days to reach a full time weekly wage and you can even study whilst you are waiting to go on set. The hours can varie but I find it to be an excellent way of encorporating work around university.
A few agencies are:
- Industry Casting
- Scream managment
but you may wish to google TV extra agencies in Durham.

Another Job idea, which I did during my undergraduate degree is Makeup / Fragrance agency work. Again, you can choose the hours and days that you work and accept jobs to suit your studying hours. With it being agency work, I believe the rate is usually about £80-£100 a day now depending on the counter you work on! Its flexible, fun! and great for socialising. i dont know of any agencies in Durham but here are a few that I used to work for back in 2013 which are still active:
- Flair Agency
- Face Agency

One more job that may be slightly more rare to come across, but when you do its great! Is event work or Photo Booth work for parties. Photobooth work is usually taking photographs of people with funny hats and accessories on. Its done via a machine so all you need to do is click the go button.

Event work is also great. Again, the money is good (but not as good as makeup counters or TV work), it is flexible and great for meeting people. During event work you usually do things such as: taking tickets a concerts, bar work at horse racing events etc. Anything where people need extra staff for large events. Sometimes outside work is included such as pointing people to the right car parking space etc . Again, im not sure of the ones in Durham, but its worth a google!

i hope this helps!
