IAL EDEXCEL M2 Jan 2018 Q 2(b)

Hello, I am having a small problem with this question, I would appreciate any help on it.

I made a sketch of the the quadratic and saw that it crosses the x axis at two points. and I used those two as my limits to find the area bounded by the curve but the mark scheme has also included another region that is not in the sketch. Please help me understand why

Try putting in a couple of numbers to see where the particle is going. When t = 0 P is at the origin but v = -1 so the particle is moving in a negative direction. When t = 0.5 v = 0 so P stops and heads back the other way.

You are asked to find the DISTANCE travelled, so you need to consider how far it goes in the interval 0 - 0.5 then how far it goes in the interval 0.5 - 1

Hey, I didn't really think to test whether the particle changes direction and goes back to origin but I will definitely do this for any similar questions in the future. Thank you so much!
