5 things to consider when choosing your uni

Although these may seem obvious, I hope that by shedding light on these few aspects of university life you will be able to make a well informed decision.

1. Course: The first and probably most obvious thing you need to consider is what to study. My biggest piece of advice here is to choose a subject you have a genuine interest in as university study is largely independent and therefore you don't want to end up spending all your time reading about a subject that is boring to you. Choosing a subject you like is more likely to lead you to a job you like in the future. Additionally, look at individual modules not just course titles as these differ from uni to uni even if the course is the same title. You might find a course with the prefect modules for your interests!

2. Location: Think about the type of place you want to live, do you want a city with lots going on? or a peaceful rural area? Imagine yourself having the best time at university and look at the type of place you imagine yourself in. The location of your university plays a huge role in uni life, this is where you will be living for the next few years!

3. Campus Type: There are city universities where the universities buildings are spread out across the city and you will be fully immersed in city life, alternatively there are campus universities where all your classes will be on the same campus and it is likely that you will also live on this campus. For example, York St John is a campus uni in the sense that all your lectures and workshops take place on one campus that is just outside the city walls, however you do not live on campus, YSJ accommodation is spread across the city of York.

4. Cost: Money is often the biggest worry when it comes to thinking about university. A while you have a tuition loan for your course and and maintenance loan for rent and food this is not always enough. Many students have part time jobs to help fund their time at university so this may be something you consider when choosing your university. Additionally, most universities will have a financing team who are able to help students. At YSJ there is the YSJ larder to help those struggling with the cost of living crisis access food.

5. Extra Curricular Opportunities: Finally, you want to consider that university is much more than study and part time jobs. Look into what societies and events each university has. This can be a great way of making friends when you first arrive! Look for societies that excite you and help you look forward to the exiting time ahead!

Hope this helps, Faye
