Confusion about firm, choice and clearing

I've heard that when you choose your 5 unis, you have to select a firm and an insurance. If you don't meet the requirements on results day, you go to clearing? But what about the other 3 universities you applied to?

If you don't meet the requirements for either your firm or your insurance, you could see if the other three universities have places in clearing and are likely to accept your final grades. They will have disappeared off your application at the point that you choose your firm and insurance.

Once you choose your firm and insurance your other choices no longer exist. You can only go to your firm if they accept you. If they dont accept you then your insurance choice consider you. If your insurance rejects you then you are placed in clearing and can look at any university who still has spaces. Be aware that leading universities and courses dont enter clearing so if you get rejected by firm and insurance you might not be able to use your other choices.

Your position will be

Firm that is where you go if they accept.
Insurance if firm rejects.
Clearing if both firm and clearing reject

So what is the point of applying to 5 when you only get considered by 2?
You apply for 5 then choose 2. Your firm has 1st choice on you. If they accept you that is where you go. Your insurance only considers you if your firm rejects you. The others fall when YOU choose firm and insurance.

You get to apply to 5. You can be rejected by them all. Some are every year. If you get more than 2 offers you decide on your 2 and which one you really want to go to. Your choice assuming you get offers. You seem to want to keep all 5 which is not how firm and insurance work.
