Do you need a thesis to get a 9 in English Lit

Lots of examiner reports say that most people that get top grades are those that start their essays with a thesis for English Lit I have never done a thesis and my teachers still give me good marks, does anybody know if the examiners will also give top marks regardless if the content is still good (THIS IS FOR ENGLISH LIT GCSE AQA BTW)
