Tips for applying to life science master's and PhD course?

Hi, I am currently a year 2 undergraduate neuroscience student and will be in my final year next year. Being a researcher in the field of neuroscience has always been my career goal, with my current planning postgraduate will be going into a master's course for gaining more knowledge and research experience before applying to a PhD course. However I would love to ask for anyone who has experience applying to a life science postgraduate programme, what do you think are the most important things that I need to do or be prepared in order to secure a place in the postgraduate course?
