Commute to/live at uni in 3rd year

I'm just wanting some advice, any would be really appreciated.

So a quick overview - I'm 23 (classed as a mature student) and will be going into 3rd year of uni in September. I go to a uni in a different city, about 40 minutes from home and have lived at uni in halls, in both 1st and 2nd year so far. Long story short, uni has been a massive let down so far - Have nothing in common with flatmates, small course and nobody on my course socialises - I have never found it difficult to make friends previously, but at uni this is so difficult. I've tried multiple societies and met some people, however the events are not regular and so myself and others don't really stay in touch. I thought 2nd year would be better, but it has actually been worse than 1st year in so many ways and has had a big impact on my mental health. Generally, I now hate my course which I loved in 1st year and this reflects on my grades. I only really socialise when at work.

Based on my experience so far, I wasn't sure whether it would be best to commute in 3rd year or live at uni and hope it will be better than the last 2 years. I know only I can make the decision, but I wondered if anybody has had a similar experience and how they navigated this. Thanks

I have no advice unfortunately but I am interested in this thread.
If commuting is cheaper than I would recommend that mainly to save money.
Could I ask what uni you're at and course you're doing? I'm supposed to be starting this autumn

Hi there,
You're definitely not alone! I didn't make many close friends until my third year of uni and it was only through persisting (and generally putting myself out there) that I eventually met people I got along with. I actually took a chance and moved into a private student accommodation (which held so many events) and met several people there who I still talk to years on. My home was about half an hour away from my uni but moving out was definitely the best decision I made. Joining societies is good (again, it took me joining many before I found one I liked) and working/volunteering.

It's up to you whether you commute but I'd definitely consider the cost and whether you would be happy spending the extra time going to and from uni. Working from home can also have it's challenges, so weigh all this up before you make a decision.

Hope this helps!

- Sophie
