How much group work is there in the course? And are groups assigned to you or do you pick them yourself?

There is quite a bit but this is like any other dental school really but there will always be times where you have nothing to do which is really nice. Compared to other dental schools, the workload is definitely a lot less academically as you only have 3 written papers throughout each year ( one each term) and then 2/3 written assignments in each year. You'll also have practical assessments in years 1-3 however you get lots of time to practice in your phantom head sessions and as you progress through the course, from about year 3 onwards, the majority of your time is spent on clinic seeing patients. It's almost as if you're working as a dentist full time but still in uni, it can be stressful but Plymouth organise everything really well and it prepares you very well for life after dental school with the amount of clinical exposure you will get compared to other schools. In terms of groups, they're allocated randomly by the uni which is quite nice as it saves on any drama and forces you to get to know everyone!

Hey, do you find there’s much to do in Plymouth outside of your academics eg, places to eat and socialising opportunities

Hi! If I'm honest I did struggle at the beginning adjusting to Plymouth as I come from a big city so it was quite a big change and I went to uni during COVID restrictions so I didn't get the traditional freshers which I think also altered my experience in the beginning. This won't be a problem for you ! However, as life etc has gone back to normal I've grown to love Plymouth. I couldn't see myself anywhere else. There's loads of places to eat and they're starting to open loads up continuously as the city becomes more popular with students including shopping etc. There's loads of societies to join and the SU is a great student night out. In the summer it is amazing, you can go down and sit at the Plymouth Hoe all day, venture into Cornwall which isn't far at all or other surrounding areas like Exeter etc. It is definitely not like your big cities like London, Manchester, Newcastle etc with endless things to do and you might find that especially in winter months you struggle to find things to do however, the pros definitely outweigh the cons for me; and when you make friends and meet people you'll start to find stuff to do and venture out so it fills your time. Plymouth is definitely what you make of it and as someone who wasn't totally convinced when I first moved there, I will be gutted to leave when my time is up!

Hi guys, 4th year dental student at Plymouth here. Feel free to ask me any questions!

Hey, what accommodation would you say is the best for first year dental students?
In terms of how nice the building itself is, and also particular accomms that dental/med students particularly go for?
Thank you

Hey, I would say Francis Drake or Mary Newman for university owned halls as they’re on campus and right opposite the building where your teaching will be and the SU. They also have en suites if this is something you’re looking for. I personally stayed in Beckley point which is right opposite campus - it is a private owned halls and has lots of extra amenities like a cinema room, games room, 24/7 reception for issues and to collect your parcels etc. It’s less than a 5 minute walk away from the campus.
In terms of the nicest buildings for halls I would say Beckley Point wins it. There’s not really an accomodation where dental/ med students particularly go for however there does tend to be a lot every year that live in Beckley point or Francis Drake

Does the university have a gym? If so, do you know how much it costs by any chance?

Hey, yes the uni has a gym it is the student union gym on campus and it is £15 a month however there are also plenty of other gyms in town like 10 mins walk away from accommodations like pure gym, the gym etc which are much bigger than the uni gym most people opt to join those than the uni gym

Will plymouth let us know the outcome to the reserve list by May 16th? I rang and the lady said will find out on results day which isn’t what the email said?

Is it better to stay in private accommodation or university halls for first year? Private accom is cheaper and looks nicer but the only downside is that university halls are closer and will perhaps make it easier to socialise.

I stayed in private accommodation during my first year in Plymouth, it was a lot nicer compared to uni halls. Only 2 uni halls are actually on campus, the others aren't and obviously none of the private are on campus. However even though they're not on campus they are within 5 minute walking distance from the uni. The only exception to this is Astor House which is a private accommodation which is about 15/20 minutes walk (wouldn't recommend as it's not ideal for 9am's etc) most first years opt to go for Beckley Point if they go for private accommodation - right opposite the uni and a lot nicer than uni halls, this is where I stayed in first year
Hello,
I got an offer from Plymouth, but I have some questions about the next steps. I am a gap year student with achieved A-Levels of 3 A*s, so the only conditions on my offer are to sign some student agreements and send in my qualifications. I can't yet reply to the offer as I am waiting on Dundee to reply. I really wanna go to Plymouth, so I am thinking of withdrawing my application to Dundee, so I can firm Plymouth and progress with accommodation etc. Is this sensible to do? Idk if im overthinking things (j wanna know that my place is confirmed in Plymouth)

Thanks in advance

Hi there! Great to hear you're wanting to study with us here in Plymouth and congratulations on your offer! 🙂

Sounds like you are all set if you have achieved those grades and just have to sign those agreements/send qualifications to the admissions team! If you have any questions or want to confirm your place, please do contact the admissions team at [email protected] and they'd be happy to help.

As you'll likely have seen, the accommodation portal is open for those who have made Plymouth their firm offer and there is an accommodation guarantee for those who apply by a set date, so I'd recommend applying as soon as possible if you'd like to secure your accommodation and study with us here in Plymouth!

My advice would be to definitely not overthink your decisions and follow where you're really interested and passionate about studying. I've loved my time here in Plymouth so far and hope you will too!

If you have any more question, feel free to reach out! Best of luck 😃

I think if your on the waiting list you hear back on results day. I'm not too sure tbh. You can always phone up and ask.

Is there any group work with people from other courses, such as medicine?

In third year you do a module working with a different healthcare course on the crossovers between their course and dentistry, each EBL group is assigned a different course to work with e.g., paramedics, dietetics, midwifery, speech and language therapists, optometry etc - this is really the only interaction/ group work you will have with other courses
