Hi Matthew,

I qualified last year with a first in BSc Dental Hygiene. I hope to pursue dentistry at Aberdeen for 2024. I just wanted to check what is weighted in the decision to get an interview/place. Is it just your degree, personal statement and UCAT score? Or are there GCSE/A-level requirements that need to be met too? Thanks

Thanks for the question! You may be asked to provide your secondary school grades when applying just so we have a full picture of your education history, but you are correct that for the application we will considering your degree, personal statement, and UCAT result. Any other entry requirements would be specified on the course page so you don't need to worry about specific requirements that aren't mentioned.

I hope this is helpful and you can either contact us or the Institute of Dentistry if you have any more questions!

How many spaces are available per year for aberdeen dental school?

What can you suggest to help an application for post graduate dentistry? As the spaces are very limited

How many spaces are available per year for aberdeen dental school?

Thanks for the wait while I checked this. Our Institute of Dentistry has 20 spaces each year for new Dentistry students. I am uncertain if this is across the courses and if so how it is divided up. We understand this makes things quite competitive but it's the number that we have the capacity to support and give a good quality of study. I hope this is useful to know!

Thanks for posting! I should say that I'm not a professional when it comes to giving applicant advice, but I've put together some guidance that will hopefully prove useful.

A good first step would be having a look through the information offered about the course you are interested in and the Institute of Dentistry we have available on the website. This can really help with catering your application and details of your personal statement to directly address or include details of why you are well suited to aspects of the courses. This is a good tip for wherever you're applying; being able to throw in an example of something you know about the degree/institution shows that you've done your homework and will stick out to those reviewing your application/interviewing you. You can find the pages of relevance on our website here: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/dental/index.php
We don't have any specific advice on Dentistry unfortunately, but we do have some general Postgraduate application FAQs which may have some relevance to you: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/study/postgraduate-taught/applying-for-a-postgraduate-programme-952.php

It would also be worth having a hunt around online for any resources and tips that may be available for those preparing in your situation. Be aware that a lot of the advice may be aimed at Undergraduates but can still contain some useful information.
The Complete University Guide's advice article on applying to Dentistry: https://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/student-advice/what-to-study/top-ten-tips-for-applying-to-study-dentistry#:~:text=Ten%20tips%20for%20applying%20to%20Dentistry%201%201.,school%20...%208%208.%20Revise%20...%20More%20items
UCAS's page on Dentistry application advice: https://www.ucas.com/undergraduate/applying-university/personal-statement-advice-dentistry

I hope this is useful in starting you off and all the best in working on your application!

Hi
I am applying for Aberdeen graduate dentistry this year. Hope to get in.
My ucat score is 2520 band 2 SJT and have a 1st class bsc, distinction in MSc and soon graduate with my PhD.
Do RUK students still get student finance england sfe maintenance and tuition fees alongside the NHS students for the course since it’s in scotland and i’m an english student
Can I apply ucat 2430 band 1 or is it better to take a gap year with this score? :frown:

are you ruk or scottish? if you’re scottish you should be fine but still ucat only makes up a certain percentage of the application look up the ucat ppl they have all the dental achool ucat requirements. apply strategically long as you got a 2:1 or 1st , good ps/reference, good gcses and work experience you should be fine!
Original post by Dentistryyyy
That’s encouraging! I’m Scottish. Was a bit disappointed with my score as had been averaging much higher in mocks. </3

Where else do you think I could apply? On track for at least a 2:1 biomedical sciences.

I didn’t do GSCES…
National 5 - AAAAAA (biology, chemistry, physics, english, maths, music)
Higher - AAABBC (english, music, RMPS, human biology, chemistry, physics)

Open University: a chemical story - molecules, medicines & drugs

yeah aberdeen don't have a cut off they but when i looked at the freedom of information it said otherwise i think the do favour Scottish students over ruk there's more spaces 2023 entry lowest interview score was 2110 for scotts and
2460 for ruk https://www.abdn.ac.uk/dental/study/bds/ukcat.php
idk about the other grad entry schools ik kings want 2700+ and uclan it's their first time using ucat so they've not said how theyll use it

Great thank you. Let’s hope they let us know soon, will have to sort flights and the rest if I get one! They did them on Zoom last year. Would’ve made it much easier!

Thank you all the best to you too!
Hope to get one I am trying for 6 times and with a phd!
What is your ucat score? I got 2520 hope it is enough.
Also, how did you find the online interview last year? It is a shame you did not get an offer.
Original post by JordyJRT
Wow, that’s a lot of commitment. It is my first year applying, I just know from the 2022 applicant page they were online. I got 2680 on the ucat.

Thank you hope we both get in this year!
Was the interview too hard last year? Did you get the same ucat score last year?
