mitigating circumstances

Hi,
This is a random question but what would happen if you took an exam in the re-assement period due to mitigating circumstances and you would fail this? as it is your first attempt at the exam would university allow you to retake it at the next available period? or would it cause you to fail the year? I am just curious because I am sitting one this summer and overthinking.

There is no clear cut answer to this as each university has its own rules. You need to check the Acadmic Regulations for your university.
Depends on the university, and course requirements.

If you fail a summer exam first attempt there are likely 2 options:
- mandatory credits for progression - you would likely have to pass the module in the next cycle before you can progress
- optional credits - you maybe allowed to progress & resit next year alongside your next year content, although often this is not available if they believe this could affect your next years performance or progression
- they may require all 120 credits for progression thus you have no option but to pass before you are progressed
- in some cases normally only near miss optional credit first year modules they may award you the credits as a “condoned fail”

Easiest way to ensure progression and avoid any kind of future academic handicap is to pass the credits.
