Will I be eligible to do the LPC?

Hi,

I start my LLB course this September and I was wondering if I’ll be eligible to do the LPC after or would I automatically have to do the SQE?

Thank you.
Definitely only the SQE (unless you already have a training contract offer by the cut off date - very very unlikely in your case as you just are starting the LLB course). https://www.sra.org.uk/become-solicitor/legal-practice-course-route/transitional-arrangements/

Everyone will be in the same position and law firms (if you want to be a solicitor and find a contract during your degree) who sponsor future trainees if you are lucky will pay for your post grad SQE courses and exam fees. Keep an eye out during your degree for deadlines to apply for vacation schemes and training contracts during your LLB. The big london firms in the City Consortium set out a summary as follows:- https://www.slaughterandmay.com/media/rs2jvepv/the-city-consortium-solicitor-training-programme.pdf
In the Autumn 2023 people can start applying for training contracts (the 2 years working) which start in 2026.

This firm gives some useful dates on this link so you can see how far ahead the firms recruit. https://www.nortonrosefulbright.com/en-gb/graduates/apply

Hi,

The majority of law firms are moving the SQE training contracts, so there is more of a chance that you will do the SQE exams which you will prepare for during your postgrad if you want to be a lawyer. I hope this helps.
Prepare for the SQE because they seem to all be heading that way 👍🏻
It is not a question of choice. No one in England who is just staring an LLB Is allowed to qualify via the LPC any more - it is forbidden. The deadline for the old system is on the SRA website etc. In a sense this makes it simpler - 100% of people of this vintage have to do the SQE and the difficult decisions of the last few years of choosing whether to do LPC / SQE are gone for those just starting and LLB now.
