Help with an unordinary student finance situation...

This will take a bit of explaining.
I've already used one year of tuition loan, and decided to pursue a different course the following year. Despite enrolling and believing things would go well, I suddenly had a mental breakdown and had to withdraw before my lectures started.
I am now in a better state of mind and want to go back to a different university, however, although I let my previous university know ASAP when I was withdrawing, they claimed that I attended sessions and therefore student finance is not allowing me the tuition fee loan for the first year.
Naturally I am stressed out about this, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to what I can do in this situation? I've heard about extenuating circumstances, but I'm not sure what evidence I would need. Thank you in advance!
