I’m feeling unsure about my Clearing uni…

I realised what course I actually wanted to do a little too late, after the UCAS deadline. So I applied and got an offer through early clearing to the University of Leicester, which I’ve now accepted and I’m excited for the course. But of course going through clearing I didn’t have my top choice of unis, which is totally fair, but now I’m in this position I’m really worried about leaving. It’s around 3 hours from home and the accommodation I’ve been allocated is very expensive, making money a huge worry for me. I don’t want to take a gap year to reapply for the course at different unis that I want to go to, because I already took one and know I have to go to uni this year. Essentially, I’m asking for some advice on what I should do, or anyone who’s been in a similar situation. Thanks!
Sorry to hear you are having doubts. It sounds like you are being realistic that this is your shot at studying the subject you want to and Leiscester is a good uni. For almost everything, where you study is really not as important as the quality of degree level you eventually get. so in the end I don't think you will miss out on not being at a 'top' uni.

I think you should budget money really carefully and also get involved with student life as much as you can, to build up networks of friends who can offer support and make the experience enjoyable. some of this is starting university nerves, maybe because the decisions were circumstance based rather than you having full choice over what you do.

You'll be fine

What you are felling is totally NORMAL.

Thousands of people all over the country are feeling exactly the same as you and that's totally okay. A mixture of excitement and 'will it all be okay', Its a big step - but one where you will have lots of support and you will not be on your own. Once you have got there and start your course and get involved in things, you will wonder what you were worried about - promise.

Hey @moonstars27
I'm glad to hear you're feeling excited about the course, which course is it you will be studying?

The transition to uni is a big step, so it's completely normal to have these concerns.

I'd definitely recommend trying to come up with a realistic budget, I've got some blog posts you might find useful that covers some useful tips and advice for helping you along the way:
Cost of living tips for students
Money tips for students

You could also think about finding part-time work during your studies and find a good balance between study, work, socialising and rest.

If you feel overwhelmed at any point during your university journey then please know you can reach out for support, your uni will have lots of support available to you such as counselling services, student support services and financial advisors.

Living three hours away from home can be hard at first, but I'd say if you do feel any homesickness just keep in regular contact with friends and family, make plans with them during your breaks, and focus on making new friends at uni as well and attending events with them, going for walks, grabbing lunch, just getting yourself out and about and keeping busy

Good luck for your uni journey, I'm sure you'll have the best time!

Congratulations on getting your offer! It's totally normal to be feeling what you're feeling now that the adrenaline of results day and getting a place has worn off. I'm sure once you're all moved in and bonded with your housemates you'll feel much better.
Money can be a concern for many students, have you considered getting a part-time job? It may help alleviate some of the stresses regarding money. . I became a student ambassador in my first year and it's great way to earn some money on the side and the assignments are flexible to my course and other commitments.
Hi @moonstars27,

I'm sorry to hear you are having doubts about your university experience.

Please remember we have all been there and you will not be the only one feeling homesick or lonely.

Which is why all universities have Freshers Week that is the ideal time for you to meet new people, try new experiences and get a better insight into uni life.

Also if you feel like your mental wellbeing is declining, universities offer mental health support and make sure that you never feel forgotten or leftout.

Remember to not be afraid to try new things but also never feel pressured to do things you're not comfortable with.

I wish you best of luck!

Kind regards,
Melanie
