Is £70 pw enough?

Hi guys
after deducting my accom from my loans and savings I'll be living off about £70 per week. Is this enough? Some say they do fine off £20. I don't think I live in a super expensive location and I'm only one person so I mean? Just want to get another opinion on it. Thanks!

We don't know what your expenses are, so you need to sit down and work out your budget; eg, food, cleaning, laundry, travel, socialising, phone, hobbies, clothes, birthdays and Christmas...

£10/day is going to be tight to feed yourself and have some cash for leisure activities too. I reckon it’s just about possible if you’re frugal. If you have some upside income from other sources, parents, part time work it would be even better
Yeah it's maybe doable if you just want to scrape by, but it's close to what you would get on unemployment benefits. Might be worth investigating hardship fund etc to bump it up.

That’s £280 a month no way is that enough considering the cost of living crisis as well.
Was enough for me (could have spent less if it wasn’t for takeaways and going out to restaurants, getting trains etc) but that was during months were a rent payment wasn’t being made.

But I don’t do clubbing and all of that jazz and some months you might need more money.

Hi @ethersea

£70 per week would definitely be doable if you budget well, but it really depends on your lifestyle.

If you spend a lot on food (groceries, takeout), have pricey hobbies, travel, go on nights out and socialize, and do a lot of shopping, I think you would find it very hard to stick to this. However, if you were to budget properly, you would be able to manage it, as you'd also have to consider laundry, presents, subscriptions, an emergency fund, and things like that.

I personally was able to live off of a similar amount, as I would spend around £15 a week on groceries, and didn't go on nights out, have expensive hobbies, or do a lot of shopping.

I would also recommend looking into part-time work while you are there though, as there will be a few options for employment with your university (student ambassador, library staff) or in your university city, which will help to give you some more freedom.

I hope this helps!
Isabella
