The Student Room Group

12 mark essay question...

I've been given the question from the June 2004 paper and i understand it, however im not quite sure on what relevant information to put in the second part, or how i could argue the points.

The essay is:

Using information from Item A and elsewhere, briefly examine why religious groups such as those referred to in Item A fail to attract men and the under 35’s.

Any help would be great, i've started it but do not know why religious groups dont attract the over 35's :s-smilie:

Thanks :top: Amy x

Without Item A, it's hard to really answer the question, but I'd hazard a guess that the reason religious groups don't generally attract the over 35's is because of trust in tradition. If by religious groups you're referring to new religious movements, one could argue that older individuals are more likely to stick to traditional religious institutions due to primary socialisation in their childhood. There was a drastic increase in religious (or faith) schools 40 odd-years ago, which may have affected their religious choices now.

Hope that helped somehow... xx
Women are more likely to experience economic deprivation (Glock and Stark) compared to men.
On a stereotypical view, women need support networks which these religious movements offer, men are more solitary.
There is a strong emphasis on spiritual healing which appeals to women more, men are more concerned with physicalities.
Older people feel closer to death, and therefore, are more likely to participate in religious movements as they feel closer to a higher being.
