Referencing a quote I found in someone else's paper.

Okay basically I need to reference a quote in my coursework but I found the quote in someone else's paper, and I haven't read the book it originated from.
How would I go about writing the edition used if I didn't actually read it?.. Do I just put the 1st edition of the book that it's from?

Thanks
Hi, you do not necessarily need to read the whole book - you can just read the pages cited in the ref list of the paper that cited the book. If you cannot find a hard copy of the book, you can probably locate it in Amazon [which might allow you to view some pages online] or here:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

OR: on google scholar

If you can locate the book s-w online, there might be a link to access its citation, which should give the edition number [if no edition number is visible, chances are it is the first [or only] edition].

Good luck!
