If I enter a history essay writing competition, including in school ones, if I have not won them are they still worthwhile to mention in my personal statement?

I think these could be great to include! You don't have to necessarily say there for a competition, unless you won or felt it relevant, but the fact that you have engaged with out of school content is a great addition to your application. For example, you could mention that you have written essays on X subjects and discuss your interest in these areas, or include how you researched the subject to write the essays. I think it would be a good addition to drop into your statement if appropriate to show some evidence of wider subject interaction.
Good luck with writing your statement! Emily Student Ambassador at BCU
