Costume/ Fashion course unis

I am currently a fashion design student in college, I have thought about applying for costume design in uni but I have not yet found a uni I am fully satisfied with. I don’t want ONLY costume design as I want to learn how to actually make the garment as well. However, with some costume courses you can only make and not design. I am not very interested in unis in London as I have lived there all my life and I want to get a proper uni experience. When I say I want the “uni experience” I mean a uni that has a lot of social aspects, such as lots of societies and sport teams and overall very well socialised. These are the two things I’m looking for at uni. Can anyone help suggest unis?
AUB has a costume course that covers both design and making (there’s costume or performance design and film costume that have different levels of design v making but both are as practical or design based as you want). There’s not a huge number of sports and societies at AUB itself but AUB students can join SUBU clubs and socs as well (they just can’t compete for BU at inter-university levels in sports clubs).

However I’m guessing if you’ve researched then you’ve already ruled out AUB? It’s pretty much the top costume courses in the UK (won the queen’s anniversary award a few years back - the only costume dept to have that).

Have you looked at Edinburgh? Both Edinburgh uni and QM and there’s another Edinburgh college all offer costume courses so it’s a good pocket for people who want to learn about costume.

Thank you!

I have in fact visited Bournemouth (only yesterday haha) but unfortunately they have split up the costume course into just making and just designing which is so annoying as i would have been 100% satisfied with the course if it hadn’t split! Regardless both courses are very good. I wasn’t entirely impressed with the social aspect of the uni or the town itself but i think with a course that good I might have to make some sacrifices.

Even the design students still have the option to make as well - have a look at the summer show work for both courses - there’s design aspects in the costume students grad show work and vice versa https://aub.ac.uk/summer-shows/2023 (it varies between different students but that’s because there’s quite a lot of flexibility to specialise in what you enjoy)

London College of Fashion and Camberwell (Colleges for The University of the Arts London) also offer the joint course. I know you said you don’t want to go to London but between there and Edinburgh I think they’re the only ones who do joint. Maybe try checking out Falmouth, the have costume design and you can choose to take a course with a professional placement year
Hi,

The Arts University Plymouth offers a Costume Production course that focuses on developing students' practical and design skills. Besides engaging in exciting projects, students can collaborate with other departments such as Animation & Games, Fashion, and Craft. They also have access to world-class facilities to enhance their creative expertise.

Plymouth is a welcoming and affordable city compared to others, which is ideal for my studies and work-life balance. With three universities in the vicinity, it offers a student-friendly environment, along with a diverse range of nightlife, sports activities, and beautiful Devon landscapes.

You are more than welcome to check us out at our next open day, 23 March. We offer a travel bursary, where you can get up to £80 towards your travel costs.

You'd need to check the uni websites but when we were looking for costume courses that included design and making (outside of London) we looked at:

Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama - Design for Performance
Nottingham Trent
Queen Margaret
Edinburgh
Northern School of Art
Arts University Plymouth
Huddersfield
Buckinghamshire New University
This is a 3 month old thread. OP has almost certainly already submitted a UCAS application with their 5 choices before the January deadline.

It’s really not helpful to them to be making suggestions now.

They didn't say if they were applying this year...

Anyway, someone else in the future might find the info useful. Not much on student room in relation to these courses.
