In general for courses, which require, for example, AAB, are they more likely just to hand out the places to applicants who have AAA predicted grades?

They don't just "hand out" places to anyone. They make conditional offers to the best candidates. A significant aspect in determining the best candidates will be predicted A level grades. So someone with AAA predictions is more likely to receive a conditional offer that someone with AAB predictions, all other things being equal.

However, all other things are rarely equal. The personal statement, academic reference, subject choice, GCSE grades, etc. will all have an impact.
