Keeping pets in uni accommodation

Hello. I’m planning to go to uni next year but my main issue is that I currently have a pet which lives in a terrarium and I need to take her with me as no one else can take care of her. The unis I’ve applied to don’t allow pets in accommodation. So what should I do??
I was thinking about private accommodation but does that mean I’ll have to pay for things like electricity, gas and water??
Is there anyway I could get her in?
Thank u
Didn’t you think about this when you took on responsibility for an animal’s wellbeing?

How big is the terrarium?

If you are discreet you could keep it in your room and on cleaning days stow the cage in the wardrobe covered with clothes. It goes without saying that it should not make a mess or smell, not spill its food and you need to be careful who you tell (if at all)

If you feel it is impracticable you may need to approach a specialist keeper to sell it or ask the RSPCA if there are any rehoming services near you (which is always a good thing to know just in case things don't work out) The welfare of the living creature is far more important than the company it provides.

You pay for all the utilities in hall but just not separately.

I wouldn't risk it in hall as you'd get thrown out if they find her.
I think private is the way to go you should ask the landlord before you sign on the dotted line some of my house mates has fish so I don’t a triennium will be a big problem the main thing depends on your house mates (which you’ll need to make rent but if their cool it’s probably ok you will have to pay bills but who doesn’t. What’s in the triennium?

Hi there,

What pet is this? I think that it's a big challenge to look after an animal as a student, no matter finding accommodation. Private accommodation may work but you're relying discretion of your landlord.

I hope that you manage to figure something out!

All the best,

Honestly, Not really I’ve had her for a while and it only came to my attention when I realised I’ll have to more out. I understand that it’s wrong which is why I’m planning on putting her first. Worst cast scenario I’ll let a close friend keep her for the next 5 years.

Good news I’ve spoken to a few people I know and one said they can keep her so if anything I’ll do the that. The terrarium is 30 gallons which is quite big so hiding it might not be the easiest. I guess I’ll just have to see how things go

Hiya!

As a student Ambassador who does campus tours and shows off an accommodation we have on site - you would be surprised how often we get asked the question about pets and I unfortunately have to say no. I am sorry to say but all of our halls at De Montfort will say no to pets - even if it is a goldfish! 😢

You might be able to try your luck with private landlords and perhaps on certain circumstances they may allow it - it is always worth enquiring and just being honest but I am afraid it may be unlikely. Here is something which might help with further information!
Also regarding utilities it depends on the accommodation some may have a limited amount included in the rent, some may have limited utilities and therefore additional costs, or you just pay for what you use.💳️

What kind of pet do you have if you don't mind me asking? I hope you can sort something out!
