Career advice

(sorry in advance for the long mssg)

I am 19 and on my second gap year (taken deferred entry) to start med school in 2024/9. But it’s a bit complicated so here is some context:

The first time round (when I was in year 13) I applied to med school and didn’t get in.
I then took a gap year and reapplied. I got in the second time round and was supposed to start this September, however I had just recently found out that interest was forbidden in my religion, and as you know, student finance payments involve interest when you pay back. Therefore, my only option was to self fund med school, and since it would involve me moving out, the cost would come out to:
(9250£ x 5) (tuition fee costs) = 45k ish
(5000£ x 5) (living costs) = 30k ish
Total= 75£k ish

I am currently working 2 jobs part time, working over 50 hours/week, and if I continue at this rate I would probably save 25k ish, which is a long was from 75k
Therefore, I deferred my admission at uni to 2024 entry, to buy myself some time to think about my next step and figure out what to do.

My hope right now is that the medicine doctor degree apprenticeship gets launched and I get into it (obviously, that is going to be super hard too, but it’s more doable than saving 75k in a year as a 19 year old). By the looks of it however, the apprenticeship isn’t rlly starting anytime soon, and there are no details on entry requirements etc…

I am not allowing myself to take a third gap year, therefore I need to make a decision now. If there is no fourth er news from the med apprenticeship, I think it would be best to completely switch career path and go into another industry. Perhaps through an apprenticeship, because that’s the only method I can think of other than uni.
However, I totally wouldn’t mind learning a skill by volunteering at a company and working for free for a few months while learning, and then slowly working my way up that job, since in the long term I am still 19 and that is relatively young.

Aside from medicine, I don’t really have a true passion for anything, however I am the type of person who can build an interest in a field I was previously not interested in, as long as it is worth it.
The only factor I care about, is to have a career which pays well enough and has good enough working conditions and work-life balance to live a comfortable life.

Therefore, I have abstained from thinking about nursing, midwifery, etc… as careers. Or any other healthcare careers.

If I really was to make a career switch from medicine to something else, I would rather do it in something that gives me more financial stability.

A few career ideas I have thought of are: tech/software engineering/consulting/corporate jobs etc… but again… I have 0 experience in any of these in the past.

My qualifications GCSEs 11 grades 6-9
A-levels: Biology Chemistry Spanish A*AA respectively.

Any advice is appreciated so much!! Thanks in advance.

There is also a doctor degree apprenticeship coming this year! For entry requirements You must have GCSEs, 3 A Levels at minimum ABB and you must attend one of their ‘information days’ during February to be eligible to apply. You dont have to pay any uni fees. You get paid as you work. There are only 20 places. I can message you and send you the links ect for info!

I'd be very wary of trying to chase the medical apprenticeship at this stage, they seem to have been rushed out and still being organised. I am not sure which place of work you will be based in, either. There is also some question as to whether people qualifying in this way will have their qualifications accepted abroad.

If you are interested in an engineering job, especially software or tech and you speak good Spanish, you will definitely be considered for some more exotic apprenticeship/internship positions with big multinational companies- petrochems, mining, chemical, nuclear, software houses in the USA etc. Check company websites online and write to them?

I wouldn't fret too much about student loan interest. It's basically a graduate tax that is applied to the earnings of people who go to University. A significant portion of people will never pay off all of their debt and the government know this.

Hi there.

I'm a year 12 student currently studying biology, chemistry and Spanish hoping to study dentistry. I'd be really grateful if you'd be willing to share any tips on how you succeeded in these subjects and got into med school.

I'm not really sue what to advise for your next steps but I really hope it all works out for you. You may be able to earn quite a bit of money from tutoring A levels and medic applications because that's very in demand and people charge quite a lot for it.

Wishing you all the best

As for my med school journey, it was a mix of late-night study sessions, endless flashcards, and embracing the challenges. Surround yourself with a supportive community, and don't be afraid to ask for help teamwork makes the dream work, right? And your advice on tutoring is golden! If you're up for it, sharing your knowledge could not only help others but also be a sweet side hustle. Win-win! By the way, did you know that Most apprenticeships require at least 250 hours? It's a neat tidbit to keep in mind as you navigate your path. Wishing you all the best on your journey to dentistry you've got this!

Hey there!

It’s quite rare to find someone who has also done the subjects i did, which is interesting to know 🙂

I am not specialised for dentistry applications, but it’s very similar to medicine. My advice would be, just focus on getting at least AAA in your 3 a levels. And btw, don’t let the fact that you did Spanish make you feel intimidated, because most people would have done maths or physics as a third subject, but in reality, the university doesn’t care what your 3rd subject is. Only the grade matters.

Since you are in year 12, i would start looking for work experience placements in dental clinics/ dental hospitals. I would also do some volunteering on the side, (maybe at a charity shop, or a care home, or a food shelter etc.. ). Keep a journal and reflect on your experiences as this will help you build your personal statement.
Also, do other extra curricular activities or read dentistry related books which will all help you to write your personal statement.

Another thing you should do now is focus on your mocks and get your predicted grades to at least AAA.

Finally, when the UCAT registrations open, I would advise you register ASAP and book your test for end of July /August (or whenever you think is best)

Thanks a lot for your advice. Yeah, I have considered making a tutoring and med school application business of my own, but since I would have no initial reputation/reviews i thought it wouldn’t work. But I’m sure there are ways i could make it work.
My best shot financially right now is to apply for the medicine apprenticeship, although i know it is extremely competetive.

Good luck and don’t hesitate to ask any other questions/tips. I am always happy to help  xx

Hey! Yes i am Muslim 🙂
And yes… i also heard about the sharia loans and I think the latest government meeting about them stated they are likely NOT to start in 2025. I think k they are being delayed further, which doesn't really help.

But thank you for your help!

Hey again! Thanks so much for this!
Luckily my brother found out about it and I have attended the information sessions now. I honestly feel like this is my only option atp, and although it is so competitive i should still try and InshAllah whatever will happen will be for the best.

I have only heard of Plymouth(graduates only) and ARU doing the apprenticeship so far. Are you aware of anywhere else that's also doing it?
thanks again:smile:

Hey there!thanks for your advice!

Are you in the engineering/tech sector yourself? It seems like a good career sector to go in, in terms of job stability etc… which is why I have chosen it as a plan B.
But I currently have 0 knowledge/qualification/experience in any of this. But I am always open to learn, so what would be a good entry point in this field to build a career realistically speaking? (since higher level internships etc… would already be competetive and for those who already are experienced in the field I am assuming)

I am not an engineer but my brother is. If you have skills and are flexible/mobile you will always find work. If you can speak additional languages you will be even more employable.

Make the most of your early career years where you have fewer ties and commitments.
