Illustration courses?

Hi  I’m mega lost on where to actually choose still as I’m hung up on course content. I took a year out just for this reason but agh- I still don’t know where to go. My most favourite course based on content so far is Staffordshire concept art for games and film— as the modules explore everything in preproduction and all that fun digital work/fundamentals— but (I’m so sorry) it’s in stoke and I know how much stoke is struggling atm.

Ive looked at Abertay but the graduate/course work isn’t similar to my plans. Leeds concept art looks good, nice city, but the bar looks very low for student work quality :frown: but it was lovely there. Edinburgh has poor student feedback for animation and in general. AUB and Falmouth idk about— I’m on the edge plus too far away to visit Falmouth. BU was fantastic but not really my area. London is a no go due to prices. Idk about specialising in concept art as a BA due to employment and the fact illustration courses offer to grow your creativity/conceptual thinking/business, but I’d rather not be doing traditional stuff like Lino for project briefs.

Id just really like to spend year 1 working hard on the fundamentals and being moulded into a solid draughtsman and artist for any employer that needs pre production/conceptual work or finalised illustrations for anything.

Maybe animation is the way to go? I really enjoy animated projects and have done extra circular courses on it. It forces you to be good with anatomy, character and environments- software and the more+ learning industry processes. I want to throw my all at it and get a job in whichever industry and whatever role I fit in. I’m mega bad with choosing and weighing the scales with all the details :,)

Any word of advice would be amazing. Tysm.
Have you looked at ARU and MMU Illustration and Animation combined courses?
Hey 🙂

Sorry to hear you are struggling a little. It can be tough choosing the right course for you, especially when other factors come into play, for example, city life, student experience, cost of living and more.

Have you had a look at Animation & Games or Illustration at Arts University Plymouth (AUP)?
Plymouth is a very student-friendly city, with three universities there is plenty to do as a student that are cost effective as well.
I will share the links below for your reference. Feel free to get in touch with us if you have more questions.

I also recommend whichever university you end up choosing, try and visit them first at an Open Day. It is the best way to get your questions answered and also just feel if it is the right 'vibe' for you. It's important you feel comfortable and confident it is the right place to study for the next 3 or plus years.

Illustration - https://www.aup.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-illustration

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

We know how difficult it may be trying to find the perfect course But it seems like you’ve done a lot of research already which is a great start!

Have you spoke to the students currently on the course? They are the ones being taught by the lecturers and the ones undertaking the course content. If you’d like to speak with our students here at ARU about their experience, please feel free to send them a message.

Have you tried visiting the university in-person too? Getting onto campus and looking around the university and the city can really give you a feel for life there. We have our next Open Day on the 20th January if you’d like to check us out We offer lots of creative courses that may spark your interest, including Animation and Illustration, Computer Games Design Illustration and Digital Media Production. These are based in the historic, lively city of Cambridge.. If you are interested, we also offer free travel to our Open Days too 😊

Whatever your decision is, we hope you have the best experience!

Let us know if you have any queries or questions,

Jemma
