Hi, I'm a recent masters graduate of politics and IR. Honestly, it does involve some history as the institutions and current issues faced by humanity stem from historical conflict and precedent. Moreover, you don't need prior knowledge of politics as first year will cover some the foundations that you need know in your 2nd and 3rd year. Hoped this helped.
