Required practicals chemistry A level

Hi everyone. I want to do AS chemistry outside of school. Basically, out of the 10 or so AS chemistry topics, I have done 6 with school, and out of the 8 practicals, I have done 3. I wanted to switch chemistry to physics A level so I cannot continue with chemistry in school, but since I am applying to a competitive Cambridge course, I wan to do AS chemistry outside of school since I have already done most of its work. Studying the remaining topics is not an issue, the issue is the fact that I have 5 practicals to do. Is there any exam centre/course outside of school in which I can do these practicals?

Are there any required practicals for AS level chemistry, or are they just for A level chemistry?

Hi, yes there are. Same with GCSE and A-level it makes up 15% of marks for AQA. I don't know about other exam boards but here is the link to the AQA AS-level spec for practicals: https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/science/as-and-a-level/chemistry-7404-7405/as-practical-assessment

You do get exam questions on the required practicals in both the AS and A level chemistry exams. At AS, these required practicals are limited to those associated with the topics you cover in the year 12 part of the course. In the full A level, any required practical could come up.

However, you only need to complete the practical endorsement if you do the full A level.

If you are planning on doing the AS chemistry course, you don’t actually need to complete the practicals as such (though it is recommended you do), because the practical endorsement doesn’t exist for the AS.

Depending on which exam board you are with (I am guessing it’s AQA as elsewhere you have asked about “required practicals”, rather than “core practicals” or “PAGs”), you should be able to find YouTube videos covering the procedure. You should also be able to find a booklet for your exam board by ChemRevise covering each practical. From these, you should be able to learn all you need to answer the practical questions.

Sorry no I meant core practicals. I do Edexcel. Also i looked on the specification for AS, and it included the core practical parts - do I still have to do them for a qualification in AS or can I just do theory?

Thanks so much, just too check though, are you 100% this is the case as I checked on the specification for AS and it mentioned core practicals (im not doubting you i just want to be 100% confident I can do it outside school)

You don’t actually need to do the practicals to get a qualification in the AS, but you will be asked questions on the procedures of at least two core practicals.

If I can remember what practicals form part of the AS (I also did Edexcel, but this was a few years ago) and where I found useful resources for them, I’ll share the links so you can study them just as you would study the theory.

Yes. I am sure of it. You don’t need to do any practicals to pass the AS, as there is no practical endorsement for it.

If it is of any comfort, I did AS biology and didn’t need to do any of the practicals. I passed and on my results sheet, there is no indication that I didn’t complete the practicals because there is no need to do so
