It's not a social norm, it's personal preference. However, it can leave you prone to issues like infection, razor burn, irritation, ingrowing hairs, plus there's the cost of doing it initially and the upkeep.

It's personal preference. Men will say they like it shaved, but most of the time they don't even care unless it's not tidy.
