Last Uni to pick for computer science

I can't decide on my last uni choice. My predicted grades are A*A*AA I have applied to Sheffield, Nottingham, Bath and Oxford. I got offers from Sheffield and Nottingham and got rejected from Oxford. I am thinking of specialising in cybersecurity in future. I am not sure what uni to pick as my last choice. It would be great to hear any advice.

Hello!
Congrats on getting your offers! I unfortunately cannot provide the best advice, but I can speak from personal experience about Lancaster Uni. If you are thinking of specialising in Cybersecurity then it might be a good option for you: Lancaster provides a dedicated Cyber Security course, however you can switch between the related courses such as Cyber Security, Computer Science and Software Engineering even after finishing your first year if you change your mind! There is quite a lot of Cyber Security research being done at the university, a cyber security and ethical hacking student society (LanHack) and the computing courses are very practical and hands-on (which is a huge plus, in my opinion), with a good variety of optional modules.

So as a current computing student, I would recommend looking into Lancaster University and its CS and Cyber Security courses.

I have also personally heard good things about Warwick and Bath (you already applied to that one). The best way to decide is probably to go through the list and look at the courses until you find something you really like (just make sure you know what you are looking for in a course 🙂). A course that interests you, seems to offer a diverse high-quality content and is assessed and taught appropriately.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi maxusha,

Congratulations on your offers! While I might not be able to directly answer your question, I can give you more information about Sheffield or answer any questions you might have. As a second year computer science student at the University, I would say it is important to have a good range of modules that you like. Sheffield was a top choice for me as I enjoyed the city as well the course. Even though for some people university ranking and prestige is quite important, it is also important to remember that this is the city you will be living in for the next 3 years, at least. For me, Sheffield was perfect as it has a good city to countryside balance which means you have the best of both worlds. In terms of academics too, there are several projects that the University participates in with the Engineering department so you will be able to get a lot of hands on experience.

Let me know if you have any further questions!

👋 Wow! We are in very similar situations, I'm leaning towards Lancaster so I'm glad to see such an appealing Student Rep post about the CySec course. I like that Lancaster's CySec course begins the specialised content in Year 2 rather unalike other CySec courses which don't specialise until Year 3.

I don't care that Lancaster (and York's CS with CySec for that matter) aren't there on PQ's linked list of accredited courses, I'm sure both institutes are capable of sorting it out in due time.
