The Student Room Group

my a-level journey 🧸♡🍪

hi everyone!

I've been keeping up with many gyg's and decided to start one, so here goes nothing! I've reached rock bottom with motivation so I thought this might help

A little bit about me:

A-Levels:

I'm currently resitting two of my A-Levels :frown:
- biology (ocr a) (if anyone does this same exam board, pleaseeee reach out to me I'm struggling)
- psychology (aqa)

University:
I'm an aspiring medical student. Last year, I was an offer holder but unfortunately I missed out due to my grades.
I'm reapplying again! Alongside resitting and reapplying for med, I have a part-time job as a GP receptionist

Goals:
- get a med offer
- get A*A*
- be more consistent with my studies (and try and achieve a work life balance)

I hope you enjoy! I hope others feel seen whilst reading this blog. Losing out on my med offer this summer was the worst thing to happen to me, after all the effort I put in but I had extenuating circumstances which really impacted my performance, and now I feel a bit lost. That being said, I don't want to give up and give it one last go.

By all means I am open to any advice (could really use it) and any questions- will try my best to answer!

Heyyyyy aspiring med student! How’s a part time job as a GP receptionist? Did you have to go lots of training? Great way to have some experience for the future

I take bio but not ocr sorry, but on my GYG post I’ve linked a few med gyg threads, one of them may be taking ocr? Here’s the link https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7421821

And ikr I don’t have TikTok but I’d get your parents to put a time limit on TikTok so you can limit time on it

heyy glad to see a fellow med applicant!

I'll be honest, being a GP receptionist is not easy at all , but 100% it gives great insight into the healthcare system and the challenges (e.g. long list for referrals). I really enjoy taking the calls and over time, you will have conversations with regular patients. There's also the odd times when patients shout/get angry at you and it can be difficult, especially because I am one of the youngest people in the admin team and work mainly at the front desk patients think its "easier" to manipulate me, but I use that as an opportunity to develop my communication/ build on resilience.
I did have an 8-hour induction before starting the job, but ngl it's very hand's on and you learn throughout the job (e.g. taking calls, shadowing colleagues filling out referral/callbacks, being able to triage patients).

Thanks for the link to the gyg I'll check it out! And I've deleted TikTok but now Idk how to spend my free time 😬

Sounds very busy! I work in retail part time and you are so right people think that the younger employees can do whatever they want for them! I’m glad you enjoy it though

Yeah deleting TikTok leaves a void 😂

Hi! Lovely to see a new gyg!
I am an aspiring medic too who is planning to take gap year
I do Biology and psychology (aqa for both) as well so we can always help each other! Here is the link for my gyg:https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7432389&p=99117993&page=5#post99117993
For Biology exam questions practise I will always recommend physics and maths tutor: https://www.physicsandmathstutor.com/biology-revision/a-level-ocr-a/
It also has really good flashcards that refer to near enough each specification point- hopefully you’ll find it useful!

Also have you applied already or will you applying for med in 2025?

Yesterday I spent my time completing the assignments from the other day, so I think I'm going to make a shorter list today to hopefully cover- small steps remember!

to do:
🌸review biopsychology
🌸complete biopsychology questions from tutor
🌸interview prep (review ethics, gmc, hot topics, wex)
🌸 respiration notes
🌸respiration blurting+ mind map
