Glasgow Accomodation

Flats should start going up for let in March. Be quick as they go very quickly.

I rented with Grant Management this year and i would not recommend them to anyone. They do however have some very nice flats in great locations but are a nightmare to deal with. Avoid unless you like a lot of added stress in your life!

From what i remember last year there are a lot of 5 bed flats around but we didn't see many 4 beds for let. (we looked for a 4 bed and them ended up viewing 5 beds due to a lack of 4 beds, there may be more though as we looked fairly late in March).

I wouldn't worry too much if you don't get a flat in March - i know people who got flats a couple of weeks before term started!

According to people at the information event in the Fraser building on Tuesday, you don't need to start looking until March, and stuff will be available from then onwards. April and May were the best months, according to whoever it was I was speaking to.

Is it just me, or does Glasgow seem to do all this really late? Almost all my friends at other unis had got their places sorted either before Christmas or in the first couple of weeks of January, but we're being told we don't need to bother yet!

Thats why earlier in thread I said January as was at full time uni last year in Cumbria and the accomodation fair was 17th January but even the next morning at 9am about 90% of the private lets had gone.

And a friend at Chester had is around same date 3 years ago and again within a few days all the places had gone.

I've got a few friends there who say it's nice, but whenever they come to Blackfriars they say our rooms are nicer (which I agree with) although their kitchen/living rooms are slightly better...however I think they pay more too...

It's 113 per week? How long does it take from there to medical school through the subway? when does the subway stop working? and what are zone cards?
Sorry for all the questions but last time i went to scotland i lost money cos i didn't know you needed exact changes

EDIT: and do you have any links to blackfriar? how far are they from the popular nightclubs and SU

http://www.unite-students.com/student-accommodation/glasgow/blackfriars that's blackfriars

Both blackfriars and vicky halls are about 10/20 mins walk from night clubs (depending on which club!) or a £3ish taxi ride
Medical school is 2 mins from subway at Hillhead, so 10 min walk to subway from either blackfriars or vicky halls (although from blackfriars you can use the low level train and that takes 2 minutes) then from the subway it's about 10/15 mins on average depending on your wait for subway!
Subway stops about 11:20ish at night (hence why me and my blackfriars/vicky hall friends rarely go out to unions except for special events, as we would have to get taxis back)
zone cards are basically cards which cover zones, zone 1 covers all of subway and a bit more, I have a 10 week zone card because it's cheaper than buying tickets for subway each day!

Yer, just saw the link, it doesn't come up on the Glasgow site so maybe it's not for first year students? Do you still get to meet a lot of people not being in the west end where majority of the students are? The distance seem okay . Would it still cost a lot if 4 of you got it back and shared the taxi cost? So with 2 zones i should have most of my travelling covered? Thanks a lot btw

Neither Victoria Halls or Blackfriars are Uni of Glasgow Accommodation (unless Glasgow has bout vicky halls since this year), but are rather full of Glasgow uni students due to glasgow uni always oversubscribing

I've found no problem with making friends, although the majority of my friends are Blackfriars / Vicky Halls people, and a group from Cairncross

The distance hasn't been a problem for me at all, and next year not even going to move to west end, but instead sauchiehall street (right next to the clubs!)

Taxi back from uni at night would be about £1.50/£2 each if shared between 4

Yeah I've got a 2 zone, zone card and haven't had any issues

Don't worry about questions, feel free to bombard me (although I'm sleeping now, so shall reply later!)

I've got mixed feelings about it.

The positive side - the accommodation itself is nice. Decent rooms, ensuite, we have a kitchen and living room with sofas, which means you aren't just confined to your room the whole time and there's a place to sit and chat with friends. It's close to the shops, central station, clubs etc.

The negative side - I don't like being outside of the uni bubble. The subways closes at half 11 most nights, meaning I have to leave events early or else get a taxi back, which if I'm doing it on my own gets expensive. On a Sunday it's only open from 10-5.30, or something like that, so you're confined to the city centre. For some people that isn't a problem, but as lots of my friends live in normal uni accommodation/elsewhere in the west end, and a lot of the social events I want to go are over near uni, it gets very frustrating!

Overall it's good though.

It's the being shut out of the uni environment that i really don't want, the university has put victoria halls as one of it's accomodation and it's apparently common with the undergraduates. Do the buses not work at night or does the 2 zones not cover it? And do students not spend a lot of time in the clubs?

I don't feel shut out of the uni environment  my friends from uni are from blackfriars and vicky halls, guess it depends on where you make your friends really!

Ooo guess that must mean the uni has bought some rooms in vicky halls then for them to list it!

I spend my time in the city centre clubs (which are perfect for me and my friends), people i know who live at uni spend more time at the unions and viper (club in west end which is NASSSSTY) but do still go to city centre clubs too

How long do the bus work till? and i think the uni has bought it or maybe parts of it :dontknow: http://www.gla.ac.uk/undergraduate/accommodation/residenceprofiles/victoriahall/

I'd be fine with the distance if it doesn't isolate you from uni life, because i'd really want that at least 3 times a week though i'm not a party animal or anything it'd suck not to have the option, where do most students go out to socialise?

But you probably don't travel to a lot of places right? would a zone card cover you to universities on the bus?

Thanks  pretty helpful, i doubt i'd get QM and i'm not sure i like the sound of Murano but Victoria sounds nice enough, i'm guessing it's mostly people in 2nd+ year at blackfriars?

Looks like the uni have a deal with Victoria Halls as they do this year, just are allowing people to apply to it!

Never really used the buses in Glasgow, but don't see them when I'm coming home from clubs, let's put it that way! Everyone I know uses subway to get around, so much easier and faster than buses!

I can't really say where most students go out, my friends and I go to city centre, but that's convenience, I can't speak for everyone in student population! When you meet people in clubs tho, they are normally students (although a range between glasgow uni, caley and strathy!)

No, mainly 1st years!

2nd and 3rd year people look for flats but can find them a whole lot cheaper than uni and unite accommodation!

I think there probably are night buses, but I'm not sure. I have a feeling the buses might stop early as well.

It depends on who you are. Some students, like greeneyedgirl, go to the city centre clubs, but I've only been out in the city centre a bit - lots of my friends from Victoria Halls are fine with staying round here, I just prefer being near uni, as most of my good friends are over there! Also being a member of a few societies means that there's often social stuff happening at uni that I want to go to. But like I said, it does depend on the person as to how you find living in the city centre - and whether you can put up with getting the subway at half 8 everyday when it's ridiculously crowded! (It's not so bad later in the day, so if you're lucky and have a decent timetable, you'll be able to avoid that nightmare!)
