Woo, have an offer for MPhil from Cam. Not that I actually want to do it any more...

Congrats. How sure are you that you don't want to do it, though? Another year in Cambridge has got to have certain temptations, no?

Grr. It's not that I object to working in principle, it just all the stuff I'm currently set is so uninteresting I have no motivation for it.

70 to 80 students??!! That's crazy. :frown:

I'm glad they've caught (some of?) the nasty muggers, though

serious question: this norovirus causes D&V - surely you can't stay in your room if you don't have an ensuite?!?!

That's rather brilliant

Though the artist lives in a country that either has the world's biggest matches or the world's smallest bluebottles.

I think they're trying to avoid the impression that if one person gets it, the entire corridor will get it. Which is stupid, because we aren't stupid and have realised that.

That's what I was thinking. I'm contemplating writing to the Senior Tutor to ask about that, just in case. Luckily, I don't know anyone who got it over here...
Argh - I've come home from the library an hour early - something I never do - just 'cos my concentration is all over the place and I'm knackered. My room offered tea and nutrients and warmth...

Meh norovirus advice is silly as you say. If anybody in my house gets it, I'd assume they'd have the sense to tell everyone else/everyone else would quickly know, and then we'd merely dedicate one bathroom to them and put a massive sign on its door and ask them not to go into the kitchen at all and take it in turns to bring them food (on paper plates). Problem solved.

Re: libraries. I've been to our department library today, which is easily the most awesome place to work in, ever. Unfortunately, undergrads are not allowed in there after opening hours (postgrads get their cards validated for 24hr access). I might try to get my card validated anyways (and if they won't do it, I'm going to start a major fight with the Faculty Board  ). It just seems silly not to let the undergrads in.

Someone needs to let the colleges know that alcohol gel is stupid and down right irresponsible. It breeds complacency and is just poor public health and infection control. I am still really annoyed about it.

Ours doesn't have any.

we've had an email saying we should use the alcohol gel frequently, and they've put dispensers of it everywhere!

Just refuse. If you're not in Cambridge then there's absolutely no grounds for her to expect you might oblige her. And no it isn't reasonable. Its reasonable for her to inquire as to whether it might be convenient for you, but not to demand or expect it.
It won't help much - its a virus not a bacterium.

Thanks for your advice. I've emailed my DoS because she's refused to budge. I wouldn't mind if she offered for it to roll over to next term, but I'm not missing this full-stop because she won't do it in term time.
The alcohol gel would probably work as long as people washed it off after application same as ordinary soap, no?

DoSes can organise one-off supervisions with alternative supervisors in such cases. Mine offered to do so for my Ethnography essay (which I declined) and we organised a special revision supervision with a specialist last year at the request of the other girl doing SPS in Peterhouse.

Argh! Both of the candidates running for CUSU presidency this year are from ethnic minorities which means I can't simply lazily choose one of them on the grounds of not being white

You wouldn't actually choose on that grounds, would you  ? The mathmo's manifesto does seem a bit weird, though.

No it was mostly a joke. Although I did vote in JCR elections on an extremely arbitrary basis. The person who I didn't want to be president lost by a considerable margin (thank goodness) but for the rest I was a bit underprepared. It really doesn't help matters that both college Hustings got announced about 2hrs before they happened, which made both of them impossible to attend

I don't usually ask permission to use my dictaphone in lectures. I'm not doing anything anyone could object to with the recording, so I don't see the point. I asked permission to use it in a supervision once, but that's different

You probably should. One of our lecturers today kicked up a fuss when someone had their laptop out as they suspected them of recording the lecture, and went on to say how that it was faculty policy that unless given permission by the lecturer one is not allowed to record them.

Anyway, another night of going to bed before 12! Good times. :yep:
