I got an offer from Christ's this morning for Arch and Anth through email, because I asked for one since I'm international.

By the by, there is a facebook group for anyone who has an offer to study in Christ's in 2010. Thought i'd mention it because all of its members appear to be people who already go there and they are talking about the distinct lack of offer holders...

Could you give a link to this facebook group? I can't seem to find it. :s-smilie:

Hopefully, that should work.

I have an offer for Philosophy.
That said it's a tad harder than a expected at 5 A's and 2 B's (I'm doing the Irish leaving cert.) I mean... I nearly only did 6 subjects XD

Im' actually pretty shocked as I probably have the worst Junior cert (GCSE equivilant results) to get an offer for quite some time at only 2 A's, 4 B's, 3 C's, and 2 D's....

Anyway I don't suppose that there is any slim possibility that the other Philosophy student for 2010 is here (assuming that there's at least one other, if not 2  )

Congrats to everyone who got an offer!
Elanor, I'm really happy you're gonna be one of the future Arch&Anthers!!! sorry i didn't reply to your pm, I have so much work to do right now- an essay to finish before tomorrow, basically-but don't worry, work is totally manageable, it's just that I have a very bad work ethic and am lazy...
If you have any questions for Arch&Anth please ask!!:o:
Just don't be afraid if I reply only much later.:eek3:
Do you think you're going to accept the offer or???
Reply 786
No way I'm not accepting it. Shall have to study pants off to achieve it, and may still miss, but I'm going to try my darnedest. /American
what about the CRICKET???????????????????

I've offered to help out with the open day, if that counts? (Although probably not the maths one, since i don't do maths)

Well at least there's another TSRer there! Really looking forward to it, just hoping everyone's nice and friendly, I don't know anyone else who is going but ah well..
We shall consume you alive. Muahahaha.

Tip: Try looking for coursemates on Facebook and the like - there is already a Fresher's 2010 group up here.

Good luck with your offer!

Don't worry - you can make friends with some of the other people there (this works. When i went on an open day in Leicester, i managed to meet a girl who was almost exactly like me and the day seemed more fun because i had a new friend to talk to ) but the open day helpers will be friendly. At least, i'll try to be friendly :p:

Hey, I was wondering if someone could tell me how is the gym at Christ's (there is a gym, right?), since I like working out (lifting weights, bodybuilding, whatever you want to call it), and was just thinking what I can expect.

Also, is it free for students?

Yes, it's completely free. The equipment is very modern (a couple of treadmills, exercise bikes, steppers, a lat pulldown and one or two other weights machines), but there's relatively little of it - meaning no free weights. However, the boathouse is better stocked on these and is usually amenable to non-boaties coming in and training providing you have a chat with them about it.

Okay, seems like the boathouse then, since I tend to use mostly free weights. Thanks for the answer

Anyone have any advice on whether it's worth getting an en-suite at Christs instead of a bigger room? (Since that seems to be the choice)

There are some big rooms with en-suite but those are expensive. Also, bear in mind that the rent band you pick won't necessarily get you what you want.

If it helps, i had a big room without en-suite and some of my friends had a small room with en-suite. I think i preferred mine. Sharing with other people isn't really annoying; although there were times when i'd find someone passed out in the toilet etc which was annoying because i'd have to go find another bathroom. But on the whole, i found that a big room was good for storage etc. But if you really like your privacy/ hate waiting for other people to finish in the shower, go for en-suite. Also, some of the big rooms without en-suite, you have to share with up to 11 others though i hear it's not as annoying as it sounds and can make the corridor quite sociable.

is it not possible to have both a large room and an en suite? how exactly does the allocation work?

It is possible but those are generally the most expensive rooms and most will probably be taken by scholars. Not many freshers will get one.

I'm not sure exactly how it works for Freshers but from what i can tell, you fill in the rent bands and then you'll randomly be allocated a room based on what you put down. These are the ones which haven't been taken by a scholar. I think some people doing the same subject may sometimes be placed near each other though that could well be coincidence. Most freshers will be near each other in staircases (so we had a lot of freshers in Z, W, Y and New Court but none were in 2nd court or 1st court). Chances are, you'll be in one of those blocks. The room you get will be decent so don't worry

2nd year and 3rd year is different. In 1st year, in Lent term, everyone in the year is placed in a ballot and drawn out randomly. You can ballot with up to 2 others so you'll be drawn out together if you do that. Then you go down the list and pick rooms, with groups of 10 - 20 being allowed to pick on certain days (so for example, 30th Jan - 2nd February, People 1 - 20 pick. Then 3rd February - 7th February, people 21 - 32 would pick). The very last group don't get given rooms till August. The college picks out the available rooms: at least half the year will have to live in College houses in 2nd year but all 3rd years live in college. However, as it's a scholars' ballot, anyone who gets a 1st may pick a scholars' room and that's why the last group don't find out until August. The ballot's reversed for 3rd year (so the person at the top originally has to take the last room in 3rd year)
