Porn stars usually chose to become pornstars

Prostitution is legal in this country, it's just kerb crawling and profiting from sex (pimping) and advertising sex that isn't. Which makes prostitution hard but not impossible to make a legal living on.

If profiting from sex is illegal then porn should be too :s-smilie:

Difference is as always, selling sex like drugs is untaxed. That's the issue, that and the fact it funds criminal syndicates. Porn pays its dues, is meant to have HASAW provisions, and conforms to legal requirements. Prostitution is by its nature associated with gang and mob crime. So no I don't think porn should be illegal, I think the law is meant to discriminate on the level of harm to society rather than prudes consciences.

I swear though that female porn stars are often coerced into it because they need money for drugs.

That must be one of the most heavily biased/uninformed/arrogant statements I've heard in a long time.
First off, who is coercing them? Inanimate objects cannot coerce.
Secondly, why do you believe that those who become pornstars couldn't get money from other jobs? There is a choice in profession for everyone, and pornstars are not necessarily less intelligent/able/qualified than any other population sample.
Thirdly, why would you assume that pornstars are on drugs? There is nothing about the profession itself which has to do with drugs. Would you agree that most university professors are coerced into teaching at university because they need money for drugs? No? Then, please tell me what the crucial difference is.

Oh yeah, no ones saying the two industries are blameless, but I think associated crime in the porn industry is hardly in the same league as crime in prostitution. If you'll note a whore who is not working out of a brothel, who does not advertise for sex and who does not solicit on street corners cannot be arrested. I'll leave it up to you to imagine how they can operate but, some manage without any association with crime. That said the vast majority are feeding drug dealers and mob syndicate rings as well so lesser of two evils where one is seriously not that evil.
Neither.

All of those things apply to prostitutes as well, so the OP's question is a circular one. All the reasons why either profession is degrading are largely just prejudices. Not every prostitute is being coerced into being a prostitute, not every prostitute is incapable of finding other work, and not all prostitutes are drug addicts either, not every prostitute practises unsafe sex, not every prostitute has STIs and on, and on, and on.

Vote & Discuss why please. I can imagine most people saying prostitute (including me) as it just degrades the prostitute totally. Also a pornstar uses safe methods of intercourse & they generally don't have nasty diseases.

What do you think?

Why does it degrade the prostitute? And since when did all prostitutes not practise safe sex and have nasty diseases?

I'd say it was far more degrading to be a pornstar. At least the details of a prostitutes sex life are kept relatively private. If you're a prostitute, the only people who know the intimate details of your "skills" are the people you're *******, not the people you're ******* and anyone with a DVD player/internet connection. And in terms of degradation through people knowing you **** people for money, the chances of you being recognised as a prostitute later in life are slim to none, the chances of someone having seen you in porn are much higher.

At the end of the day, I wouldn't say either was degrading. However, what makes being a porn star degrading in my opinion is the lack of privacy- how everyone who wants to see you ******* multiple people can do so, and that applies whether the person involves got into porn films willingly or not. What makes prostitution degrading would be if they were doing it to fund a drug habit or satisfy a pimp, which is avoided if the woman prostitutes herself willingly and isn't a drug addict. So in my opinion, if we have to say one is more degrading than the other, it would be porn stardom for me.

I don't think that you can say one is more degrading than the other. If you've chosen to go into either of those professions then there's nothing degrading about them. The degradation starts when it's something you're not doing because you want to, you're doing it because someone is telling you to/ an addiction is making you. I think there's something quite degrading in doing ANY job you don't want to, but are just doing for the money.

I suppose the crucial difference is that people who have had large stakes in the porn industry have come out and said it is rife with 'drug use, abuse and coercion'. Most of the evidence is just anedoctal but you'd expect it to be at this point.

I don't know why you are acting as though by and large porn is just women who want to be filmed having sex being filmed having sex. Of course there are outfits like that but one must wonder.

The general tone of porn in general raises questions about respect for women and so forth also.

It's nto uninformed or heavily biased. I have nothing against prostitution or porn at all, in fact I think prostitution should be legalised. Hell, if I was pretty enough I'd do it!

But I've read a few magazine articles in the past about females who take part in porn doing it out of desperation or being coerced into it.

I doubt university professors or teachers make as much as porn stars.

Why don't you take your uniformed self out of here

Prossies slightly, although if they both have control over who they sleep with, how much they get paid, exactly what they do and are safe then I see them both as admirable, especially now that I'm so broke.

I will probably get flames for saying this, but any girl who has regular one night stands has no rights, in my opinion, to look down on a woman who is doing the exact same thing but making sure she gets paid for it.

Why?
pornstar pays better, you work a lot less and get regularly tested for disease...so overall, pornstar by a mile.

They both earn more than anyone else on this thread will probably manage.

Yeah, which is why the hookers I see wandering around various British cities all look thin, foreign, ill-dressed and like they're only doing it for a fix of crack.

I don't see how prostitution can possibly be considered more degrading. Pornstars are getting paid for sex, and having it videotaped and shown to a wide audience.
i'd say pornstar. you're getting paid for people to WATCH you have sex.

if i was going to be paid for sex, i'd rather have as few people involved as possible.
