My advice for future applicants would be to work really hard on your personal statement and try to avoid just listing your achievements. Yes, they are important but it is what you learned from your experiences, your personality and suitability for medicine that the universities are looking for. With a good personal statement, you have a great chance of getting an interview and that's when you can really sell yourself.

Feel free to PM me with any questions, particularly people applying to Scottish medical schools!
Year of Entry: 2011
Deferred?: No
GCSEs: 5A* & 5A
AS Grades: AAAB (Biology, Chemistry, Maths and History)

What I've learnt: When you apply to universities with no firm emphasis on what you need to get an interview i.e. places like Sheffield require a 700+ UKCAT score, the personal statement has to be very good/outstanding. In hindsight mine was average.

UKCAT (if applicable): 645

Universities applied to and decisions:
Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford - Rejected pre-interview (In my rejection email they didn't make it clear why, but they could've just said LOL AT YOUR BMAT SCORE  ).
Bristol - Rejected pre-interview (Same old 'too may applicants, we're sorry', I asked them for more constructive feedback but they never replied :frown: )
Birmingham - Offer AAA
Cardiff - Offer AAA - FIRM

ADVICE TO FUTURE APPLICANTS
1. Don't go overboard on the ECs, work experience and voluntary work; my one week of work experience shadowing surgeons/doctors took up my whole work experience paragraph in my PS, I only talked volunteering at a care home and tutoring young pupils in my voluntary paragraph, and discussed creative writing and Duke of Edinburgh in my ECs paragraph. You don't need to have a Grade 8 in piano and violin and climbed Mount Everest (Unless you apply for Edinburgh of course).

2. Apply to universities based on your strengths; I applied to Oxford, Birmingham and Cardiff mainly because of my GCSE grades, and Bristol because they weren't very specific in what they wanted in a candidate. I didn't apply to universities like Edinburgh that love ECs, nor did I apply to universities that loved the UKCAT, as I knew mine wasn't very competitive. From doing practice interviews with doctors, I knew that one of my biggest strengths was my interview performance, so I ensured that I applied to universities that gave candidates interviews.

3. Don't go to Medlink. Work experience will cement whether or not you want to be a doctor, not a £150 5 day drinking session (which is what it is, essentially).

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, GOOD LUCK & DON'T GIVE UP! & feel free to PM me if you have any questions
