As ever, Friends has the answer:

FRANZBLAU: I try not to let my work affect my personal life, but
it's hard, when you do what I do. It's like uh...Well,
for instance, what do you do?

RACHEL: I'm a waitress.

FRANZBLAU: Ok, all right, well aren't there times when you come
home at the end of the day, and you're just like, if
I see one more cup of coffee...

That's what I'm saying.

Why??

Because apart from "fannies" there is
- cervical/uterine and ovarian cancer
- issues with in-vitro ferilisation
- ectopic pregnancies
so much of the work is on internal organs that have their own unique physiology and some people find them interesting, just like they would find the heart or brain interesting. The GP deals with fannies more; for the gyaencologist, I guess they're just a "way though".

Its the same as asking why anyone would be a paediatrician if they aren't a paedophile...

It's clearly not  In that case you could ask "why does anyone become a nursery nurse or a nursery teacher if they're not a pedo".

That's clearly not what I'm saying.

My confusion lies in, as Antonia87 said, 'what gears people towards that field of study?'

That's what I'm saying.

Why??

Because it's an interesting mix of medicine and surgery (i.e. you don't just spend your time cutting people up or handing out drugs, you get to do both).

Because (unlike many other specialties) the majority of your patients are young, healthy, and will (especially in obstetrics) show rapid and obvious benefits from your treatment.

Because you get to deliver babies, which while pretty disgusting is one of the most amazing things you can do.

Because there are lots of exciting new surgical toys to play with.

And, if we're going to be cynical, because it's relatively undersubscribed so easier to get into than some other surgical specialties.

That's some for a starter!

To be honest, I've not met any who are pervy. Once you've seen enough naked bodies and done enough surgery, it's really just another part of the body. I can imagine it might be problematic for men separating work from play, as it were, but they seem to manage well enough.

As vazzyb is saying, its just another field of study the same as brains or hearts. I would hope that by the time someone becomes a doctor they have gotten over the whole school-yard "ooh, hehehehe, he looks at vaginas, *titter titter*".
Reply 25
It may just happen to be an area in which they thought they could do the job well when it was their time to specialise in med school, because tbh after seeing x number of vaginas/ penises etc they all become one and the same really, I'm not even studying medicine yet but just from my work experience, with a morning in gynaecology they all just end up being the same really, same with penises in the operating theatre etc. You get over the body part and see much more amazing things like being able to look into the abdominal cavity, see the diaphragm and so on, it's not just about vaginas

I guess as a med student they might have been really fascinated by female anatomy while they were studying it both theoretically and practically, so I guess they'd rather be a gynaecologist? That's the only thing I can think of tho

The sort of people who can get over 'private parts' and 'fannies'.

Here's a joke.

There's a Cardiologist who tragically dies and at his funeral, two of his close friends, a GP and a Gynaecologist see the hearse approach. In the back window there is a giant heart made out of pink flowers to represent the fact the late man was a great Cardiologist. So the Gynaecologist said to the GP "Aaah I bet you can't wait till my funeral".

Though I don't understand why anyone would want to do that job.

Also, as a fanny doc, do you become de-sensitised to foof? What about your partner's foof? Does it bore you?

So many important issues here people.

Ok so I guess this thread is part troll, but mostly it concerns a genuine confusion that I have.

Who in their right mind wakes up one day and says “Oh I know what I want to do with the rest of my life spend every working day looking at muffs” :borat: (save those with perverted motivations).

Now I know that GPs have to be comprehensive with their approach. Being a GP/nurse will involve an element of looking at foofs. This I can understand. But SPECIALISING in fannies?! Why?

Also, whilst we’re on the matter, ladies would you date a gynaecologist? Gentlemen, would you date a cockologist?

You could say the same for a rubbish man, I bet they don't wake up one day and think "I want to collect rubbish".

Does being a teacher or lollypop man make you a peado?

Maybe it's a good way for guys to meet women?
I mean, you wouldn't move into a house you hadn't gone to look around first...

OH my GOD.

Are you 5 years old?

"foof" "flap" "muff"

Why do people think its about vaginas and penises? There is no such doctor as an external genetalia doctor ffs. Yes they may ocassionally deal specifically with it, but this speciality is much more about what is on the inside...
Reply 35
You'd still get a lot of money for being one.
Though the idea of going out with a guy who specialises in the fanny field would make me feel a bit uncomfortable. But hey, at least he'd know what he was doing down there..

because it saves lives
Its like saying why would someone want to be a fireman when they have to put their life in danger on a daily basis
different people find different things disgusting-some people faint at the sight of blood but that doesnt mean people should stop becoming doctors now does it?

That's Mr Latimer to you. And yes, of course, he's a legend (does clinical school panto every year) and is very keen on encouraging people into obstetrics & gynaecology.

tbh I would say a lot of rubbish men are quasi-forced into that 'profession' due to lack of options.

Quite diffrent.
