I'm going into fourth year. What third year course are you doing? How did you find second year? I hated it apart from Microbiology, Infection and Immunity and Immunology. Essential Genetics was also pretty good!

Awesome I'm doing Genetics. Immunology bored me a bit, infection&immunity was alright but I despise malcolm kennedy with a passion so that made it more difficult :P LOVED the micro labs though some lectures were a bit boring. Are you doing something infection then?
I really loved essential genetics and building an organism. Molecules of life was okay but... y'know...
Also really loved evolutionary biology  Second year went really well for me, how did your third go?

I'm doing Microbiology  Third year was so much better than second and I done a lot better overall than I did in second year. Microbiology, Parasitology and Virology are all taught together in third year which is good as you learn about all 3. I'm not too fond of Malcolm either - had him for my Immunology block this year and he doesn't use powerpoint at all. He just writes random words on the board - really annoying. Oh god, I didn't like BaO or MoL. Did you always want to do Genetics? That was one of my other choices at the end second year mainly because of Kevin O'Dell

Ahh I see, I got all As and Bs for second year and I'm actually expecting to do worse in third, I've been told everyone drops down in third year but you've given me hope for my GPA now, hopefully I'll do even better in third year too  I really liked micro it was my third choice for a degree after genetics and MCB :P
I absolutely loved BaO! Got an A2 overall, highest mark I've ever got in an exam! Wasn't a massive fan of MoL but scraped the B anyway. I didn't decide on genetics till a couple of months ago. Applied for anatomy through ucas, drifted to earth science in first year, narrowed it down to MCB, Genetics or micro by mid second year, then genetics by april just there haha  I've always been mega indecisive about my degree! (ps I also love Kevin (and joe!))

hey
I am starting my first year in genetics this September. I wanted to know if mastering biology is actually required for the course. Do the teachers emphasize on buying it? Actually I was looking forward to buying a second hand book and dont know if that will provide me access to mastering biology. cheers!

I've never even heard of that book :s or is mastering biology the online disc that comes with the book? no books are required for first and second year in my opinion and nor was the disc that came with the book. it's just a waste of money, most lecturers tell you to do the reading but there are also a few brutally honest ones who just admit its a waste of money. It is. For third year genetics get "introduction to genetic analysis" I think it's by Griffiths. You most definitely won't need it before third year though.

Mastering Biology is the interactive disc that comes with the book, isn't it? I wouldn't bother, I didn't look at it once. I'd get a second hand book, if any... In fact I can PM you my details, meet up at some point Freshers and just give you mine if you're interested? I could post it too but that'd cost money & we're poor students  I have Biology 8th Ed, Campbell & Reece.

Edit - Just realised I hardly answered your question - no, the teaching staff don't put much emphasis on it at all, I don't actually remember it being mentioned tbh

Prospective Physics students: Quote me!
I'm picking my classes and for Astronomy class I have 15980, 15981 etc up to 15985.
How do I choose which one?
How far away realistically (not according to the website which will probably be inaccurate) how far is main campus, gym and Kelvin Building from Murano?

Twenty minute to half an hour walk. Incidentally, the gym and Kelvin building are on the main campus.
Where/when do you get your reading lists? :/

I was thinking about this, but then I thought: Wouldn't I ostracise myself as others would be walking? Shouldn't I be socialising and walking with them? Or is it not like that?

Well I guess sometimes you could walk, when you feel like walking with people, and if you feel like travelling somewhere fast & getting some exercise, you could take your bike. I'd take it. But I wasn't in halls & don't cycle so yeah...
I'm so excited for third year. Even mycampus can't get me down.

I know I've asked already and no one knew or cared to answer but:
what do Erasmus students do wrt enrolling? I heard from a fellow student that our school coordinator would enroll us in the filler subjects but this hasn't happened as yet and I can't find anything that appears to be correct when searching for courses.

I know for year abroad I just had to enrol on mycampus then signed up for Year Abroad 3 :dontknow:

Do I still need to meet my course adviser even if I have no problems with enrolment?

Yeah, you have a couple of compulsory meetings with your advisor each year and this is one of them. They're really worthwhile though

I'm always amused when people say that! I've met mine once! In freshers week. I'm now going into fourth year! I wonder if i'm supposed to have met with them?!
Only met mine once, but now he's left so I've got a different one who I haven't met but he replies to emails quickly so he's alright in my books!
