'Oh that sounds like hard work I couldn't do that'
Any degree is hard work that's why you study for it or
'Oh that sounds interesting, what is it?'

Hate sayong where i go/what i study cuz i always get a response like wow or you must be clever...which i never know how to repsond to

Maths at cambridge
Electronic engineering doesn 't produce as many faces as I got in yr 12 for wanting to do Maths, maths and physics. But there is a fair amount of (essentially) "you're going to be totally outnumbered aren't you?"

Being the only girl in the room for many of the interview days has not inspired much confidence for a different situation.

Everyone who says "sayong" must be very clever. And "repsond"
Older relatives: "What's Graphic Design?"
Other: "So you can draw?" "That's cool..." "Good luck."

Ha.
Applying for theology (actually initially wanted to do it but then changed my mind).
Friends: "That's pretty cool! What do you want to be - a minister?
Me: "Actually no. I want to be a puritan witch hunter."
Friends: "oh nice. What do you do for that?"
Me: "condemn criminals then execute them. Preferably by drowning them or burning at the stake."
Friends look away.

First you have to understand that I was originally going to do engineering, so when I changed to computer science I got a lot of "But why?" questions. Aside from that, these are the general responses.

"So you're gonna be a hacker?" - by far my favorite response
"Are you going to work for the government and spy on foreign countries when you graduate?" - got this one from one of my counsellors
"So...... IT?" - yes because that's seriously the only job option
"Oh god, I'm in the midst of a bunch of smart people!" - when I was with these two other students who were going to do engineering and this one other student who was going to do creative writing (completely wrong because neither major makes a person smarter than the other)

When i say this almost everyone says 'so you wanna be a technician'

And i am like 'what. No'

*slight hesitance* 'So...is that one of those made-up degrees?'

...
"You want to be a teacher then?"
"Wow, thought you'd be doing Medicine."

Bit o' casual stereotyping...why not? :colonhash:
My most memorable encounter was the other day:

Her: "What's that?"
Me: "Well you know the economy?"
Her: "Uhmmmmmmmm..."
Me: "Okay, you know what politics is?"
Her: "Yes! Who did you vote for in the election?"
Me: "Ed Miliband"
Her: "Is that... Lib D - no, Labour!?"
Me: "Yes it is. Who did you vote for?"
Her: "Labour too! So basically you want to be Prime Minister?"
Me: *sighs* "Sure let's go with that." *Walks off*.

Degree: Economics
I usually just say Engineering, if I say Aerospace Engineering (what I'm actually studying) I end up having a full blown conversation. They'll start asking what I do on the course etc. Just non-stop questions.

Just saying Engineering seems to kill the vibe for some reason. Response is usually 'Oh, cool'.

Pornography degrees are a thing now, so, you know.
Environmental scientist

"Oooh... what's that then?"
"Cool, what do you want to do with that?"
"What do you think of (insert controversial topic, e.g. fracking, organic farming, climate change, ocean acidification, etc) then?" (and try and lure me into a debate which has nothing to do with anything or how environmental protection's useless...grrr....)
"So you're a tree hugger then?"
"Do you just study global warming?" Nope, we do everything. Law, economics, sustainable development and statistics to whales, the genetics of bumblebees and the sex lives of jellyfish.

Hate when people say this. I think it's really rude to say you hate what someone does.

Same! I'm always like "alrighty then..." and then change the subject! How do you respond when people say they hated your subject?

The usual response from my fellow sixth form students:

"Nerd."
