For me, this represents what part of what black metal is about. It's a deliberate rejection of societal norms and an aesthetic that clearly the woman on the left of the image does not understand and she looks somewhere between shocked and disgusted. Meanwhile the subject of the photograph stares into the camera doing his very best to look misanthropic. Maybe he is but the makeup and the deliberate facade put up by the musicians means you can never really be sure.

This one shows Varg Vikernes smiling. "Why's he smiling?", you ask. This was the moment that he was sentenced to 21 years in prison for murder and arson. His reaction - a wry smile - is borne from the prejudice of the justice system against him, which had built up a case based on mythology rather than the facts of the case. The fact is that he did kill a guy and yes it should be considered murder, but the case accused him of much more than that.

There are many more photos that I really like (not just of black metal musicians!), but these two are the ones that always spring to mind first.

Cheers. Black metal rarely fails to be interesting. Even if you don't particularly like the music, it's hard not to be captivated by the stories surrounding the music.
