Considering GEM- Psychology degree- Need Advice

Hi All,

I will try to keep it short.

I am studying Cognitive Neuroscience (BPS approved Psychology degree) and I am currently on a placement year. I will be returning to university this September to complete final year. I am doing my placement in a NHS mental health clinic (specialist trauma clinic), as an assistant psychologist and a research assistant. My placement is great, I love working there, especially enjoy patient interaction and applying theory to practice. I am very lucky that I have been given this opportunity and have learned so much. I initially took a placement year because I was not 100% sure about clinical psychology and part of me have always wanted to go to med school and become a doctor.

I am now considering med school but I'm not sure if I stand a chance. Below are academic and work experience details.

GCSEs : 2*, 10As, 2Bs
A levels: ABB Biology, chem, maths
Degree: expected to get at least high 2:1
Work experiences: 1 year Assistant psychologist and Research Assistant (1-1 psychological intervention, patient group facilitation, managing clinical waiting list, conducting psychological assessments, research assistant for a clinical study).

Do I stand a chance? I am thinking to get work experience shadowing doctors? any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

All you need for graduate entry is a 2.1, good experience (I would definitely recommend some shadowing but what you have from placement is also really good) and good scores in whichever entrance test(s) you decide to go for. No reason why you couldn't be successful!

Hi, thanks for the reply. Would you recommend more medical experience? do you think my placement alone is enough experience?

Your experience sounds great, but you can never have too much. Could you do something that gives you an experience similar to being a med student, or junior doctor?
