I had also seen a video.Cannot find it now but I noted down the Summary:
1)All organisms produce a abundance of offspring,more than necessary.
2)There is fairly a constant population over time for any particular organism.
3)Within species, there is a wide range of features due to different alleles.
4)Variations are passed on and are inherited by offspring.

If a member of the species has a characteristic which aids survival (due to a mutated gene), it is 'naturally selected' to pass on this useful characteristic to its offspring, because it survives to breeding age. While others without this characteristic will die before breeding age, so eventually the entire population will have this this characteristic (which is adaptive to the environment they live in).
