Edexcel AS Maths Stats S1 - SIMPLE QUESTION BUT NEED HELP

PHOTO 2.jpg

I was just
doing some stats revision when this question is yet very simple but I
can't understand why it gets this answer;

(photo of question is attached)

Basically it is implying that the class boundary of 0-4 is 5 when it
makes more sense for it to be 4.5 because you can't have negative
ages. The answer for a) is 2.9 and the class width for this is 29 so
they obviously multiply 29 by 0.1 which is what you get if you divide
0.5 by 5.

So can you explain why the width of 0-4 is 5?

Thanks :smile:

i think that for this data the first interval is taken to start at -0.5 and extend to 4.5.....

is there a similar example in the textbook ?

yeah i guessed that but as it is to do with 'babies' you can't have a -0.5 year old baby.

nah it's from the revision guide, so only that question.
