Why don't more students who can feasibly commute do so?

I'm not discussing people whose preferred course is at a university on the other side of the country, or questioning why people don't apply to more local universities. I'm referring to the people who post threads like 'going to university in home city, but want to move into halls'.

Obviously, it's their choice and I wouldn't try to persuade them not to, but I've always been curious why someone who is in the position where they could reasonably commute to university wouldn't choose to do.
Because they're going there for the lifestyle.
I think it's because this is when it's easiest to live in a hall with lots of other people your own age, so yes, they're going there for the lifestyle.

But who would blame them? :ahee: While I may not have made the most of living where I am this year, I've enjoyed it :h:
It's tedious as hell. And they're understandably sick of parents and less freedom. But if they're not one for halls I can see why cause the people are not what they're cracked up to be.
