Everyone in my year seems to have a macbook pro, or is going to get one.

The lab computers are not for gaming on, and they're really not that great specswise. With 900 quid you could get a basic core i7 930 build.

Computing first year is quite intense with a lot of stuff to be getting on with. If you think you would still like to get a 'gaming' laptop I'd at least wait until you get here, get through the first two weeks and then reconsider. I waited and was very pleased I did, since a lot of people who got their laptops before starting realised that they didn't like them.

sry for bumping an older thread, but do most people get the 13" or 15" inch model of the MBP? I tried the 13" MBP today and the screen is nice but a tad bit smaller than what I'm used to and it might not be optimal when I need to do work. On the other hand I prefer the portability of the 13" model; i don't know how often people take their laptops around campus but I've got into the habit of using my dad's old 14" laptop in airports and cafes etc.

So aside from screen size, the 13" model's portability will probably suit me better given that the difference in spec isn't important enough for me to justify the price jump. However, I plan on using the Mac for a few years and its important I make the right decision so any advice would be great. (I imagine most students get the 13" on the basis that it's a lot cheaper)

Most people in my course, including me, get the 15" - its still portable but the screen big enough to do stuff like programming. Its not so much the cost difference - its better to take a long term view - and a 15" MBP mid-spec will easily last you 4 years here.

hmm ok, well I'm getting the laptop once I'm at imperial to qualify for the student discount (apparently you get a 3 year guarantee if you do it online instead of purchasing in store) but I think I might go for the 15" as I don't fancy buying another laptop any time soon after.

I think the cheapest 15" will be fine for me, I can't see much difference between that and the next model up apart from a slighty faster i5 and larger hard disk space. Is there anything I've missed? (I've ruled out the i7 one - too expensive)

on another note, do students take their laptops outside their rooms much? At my bros uni apparently hardly anyone actually took their laptops out (understandable if the laptop is a slow piece of plastic junk that needs to be permanently connected at the mains) which would make a MBP a bit of a waste of money. Mind you, he was doing medicine, so... If I'm going to be using the laptop in the labs, libraries etc. and just a lot in general though I can definitely see the benefit of purchasing a premium product to last me for the years ahead.

What course are you doing? I do Computing, and a lot of people take their laptops to uni and back every day. There's no real need to, but a lot of people still want to.

computing here too. Guess that seals the deal then hehe
For a good gaming laptop check out www.deviltech.de -they do clevo laptops at the best prices in europe. u have to use google to translate, though most is the same.

If u wanna go local, try www.pcspecialist.co.uk which does a wider range of Clevo laptops but slightly higher price. But still cheaper than dell n hp etc.
Apologies for sort of hijacking the thread, but does steam run fine? I use it a fair bit to talk to people, and will the college mind if it does all the automatic update stuff like it does normally?

Do you mean "Does steam run fine on the college network?". The answer would be yes, as the only things the college doesn't really like is torrenting (legal or otherwise) and excessive (>5GB) usage. So, using steam is fine, as is playing games. Don't expect them to be too happy if you start downloading massive games in one session though. (I downloaded the whole of Dragon Age: Origins (15GB) in about 45 minutes, and they weren't best pleased (still only got an automated warning though)).
Ah k, Thanks. I just meant I seem to be using it more for talking to people at the moment as opposed to actual gaming, which is why I phrased it like that. I just heard that some unis block certain ports that steam uses so friends doesn't work yet other bits of it do.

Macs are for n00bs...
but don't quote me.

DO ISE STUDENTS GET MSDNAA??? WHERE TECHNICALLY EEE, BUT JOINT WITH DoC?!?!?

@specialandsimpleboy - Do you need 60fps (do you play competitive multiplayer games)? If not save some money and opt for a laptop that can run games fairly decently - I would recommend ACER Aspire 5732ZG
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/199196

this obvisouly wont run modern games on high graphical settings, but you'll be able to play them (check out the gfx card on youtube). - An all round decent notebook for a good price for 400 squid.

Games were a favourite past time of mine. I don't really have time for games anymore but I did play:

AvP
Code name panzers
AoE
All the HLs
TRs
BF1942 (never really did Viet or 2142)
Empires DMW
BF2
got BF:BC2 (quite enjoyable, cept havn't had time to really play it)
COH
Red Orchestra (heroes of stal grad coming soon)
bit of CS:s-smilie: & DOD:s-smilie: (never really go into tf2)

There were/are the mains anyway. Havn't really played the ones before BF2 for over a year now.

looking foward to playing lara croft co-op.
where is bf1943?

Will take disc images tonight (so not bringing loads of DVDs down with me)

My comp is Q6700 @ 3GHz, 6GB OCZ Plat (can't member timings), ASUS EN8800GT 512mb @ stock (soon to be getting a ATI 1GB 5770). approaching 3TB storage and 2 17" displays. Silly me getting an n650i SLI board. never did run SLI and now I cannot really get a too greater OC :frown:. Idle less than 30°C. Rarely see above 50 in game.
Next upgrade will be Octo Cores and couple of wide screens - find 17" impractical for coding nowadays.
Anyway I'll be taking my comp and laptop to uni with me. We are one.Does anybody sell comp parts at imperial?

If only I hadn't gone for a cheapo SLI couple of years back I recon my clock there easy (would aim for 4GHz).

All was good with your comp until I noticed you have blue neon lights and warhammer poster :woo: With this in mind I am offering £10 no no £15 for the motherboard. A charitable offer if I don't say so myself

Seriously though gime mobo. gime mobo now

Why you not brining it down with you?

My sister needs a computer, but she is getting a laptop for christmas and will send me my PC as soon as she gets it :woo:

I tried 3.8GHz but it wasn't stable in orthos and voltages did not help.

The new Sandy Bridge processors coming out in January will be awesome

If I didn't already have an i7 I'd be jumping at the chance to build a desktop with it.

why are you leaving that desktop for your sister?? She a hardcore gamer or can't you take it to imp?
