Southampton University Freshers Guide 2011/12

FAQs at the bottom of this post!

I'm getting fed up of replies saying 'Why don't I have my offer yet?' - I have already issued a response in the FAQs, so please stop asking!

Hey guys!

My name's Marcus and for those of you who will be joining Southampton University in September, I'm more than willing to act as a port of call for any questions/concerns you may have.

For those of you applying to accommodation in Glen Eyre, you may see more of me in person at the start of the year as I'm one of the Head Fresher Reps for Glen Eyre Halls (basically I'll be helping you move in, settle and socialise at the start of the year).

To start with, here are some resources you may find useful from this site:

The Applicants Thread - Most of you will have seen this, but here is mainly for discussing what you are going to study/what halls you've applied to.

The Uni Chat Thread - Mainly for current students to moan about their workloads/see who's going out tonight/be delighted about results etc. but it's worth introducing yourself to us in there when you first arrive in case we see you out and about.

Wiki Information about the University - This gives a general guide to pretty much everything about the City and Uni life generally, which pubs and clubs are frequented and such-the-like. I will probably update when I get a chance as some of the information is dated.

Accommodation Information (Halls) - This tells you about the individual Halls (again it needs updating as Chamberlain is no longer in use) so for those who are yet to apply this could be a useful resource.

If you have any other questions about Halls, the City itself, or anything else, feel free to ask.

If you want to know a little about me, I'm going into my fourth and final year of an MMath degree, I stayed in Richard Newitt (Glen Eyre) in my first year and have moved house in Southampton every year since. I will also the Sports Officer for the Maths faculty for the second year running, and I'm a former Countdown contestant. :colondollar:

The Sainsbury's stores are quite a distance from the University unfortunately.

I think there is one currently under construction in the Portswood area (about 10-15 minutes walk from the Uni) that they were hoping to open up in time for next year, but I don't know whether or not it will be.

Other than that he would probably need to get a bus to Chandler's Ford (I can't remember where exactly the stores are).

Shared bathrooms aren't a big deal if you aren't sharing with too many people.

If you are sharing then they're cleaned four times a week (Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri) by University-hired cleaners, whereas if you're en-suite you're expected to look after your own bathroom.

Where is the nightlife in relation to campus'? Do you normally have to get taxi's back after going out or is most of the nightlife pretty close? And which campus is closer to the ECS department? Thankyouuu

As far as nightlife goes, the Uni nightclub is within walking distance of Halls, although they recommend you to make use of the 'Safety Bus' (a Uni-run minibus that costs £1 per person to any Halls).

Many people will venture out to Portswood which is walkable depending on which Halls you're in, since they're more 'casual' nightclubs (Jesters/Sobar) rather than the smart ones further into town that you will need taxis for (Orange Rooms/Bliss/Oceana).

Depends if you like walking I guess - I do, so I only get taxis back if other people want to split costs or are in a terrible state to get back by themselves. :p:

The ECS department is on Highfield Campus (the main campus), though I'm not sure what you meant by your question - did you mean which Halls are closest? (In which case it would be Glen Eyre/Hartley Grove or Monte/Connaught)

No problem! Just noticed you have the same firm/insurance Unis as I did. :p:

It's pretty awesome but some of the lecturers are a little boring. :yy:

Sounds amazing! Anything else I need to know?
Oh actually, I have something to ask you. What's the car/motorbike parking situation like on campus? I won't live in halls and I am planning to mainly commute on my motorbike. Cheers!

There is some parking, though I think it's mainly pay and display, and there isn't a great deal of it.

You can park for free on some of the roads behind the library, although there is the issue of whether you'd feel safe leaving it there.

I'm not saying they do, (because in general they don't and it's a student-heavy area) it's more of a question of whether you feel completely assured leaving your bike around that area.
Thanks for this thread .

I'm just really hoping I get in now, I'm scared I won't :colondollar:. Anyway, the letter I got for firm acceptance says Semester 1 starts on Wed 28 Sept. I was wandering when freshers week was and when we'll be due to arrive to move into halls?

They say Semester 1 starts on that date because that's generally the 'induction day' where they run through all the bookwork and whatever to make sure everyone's turned up and give them all the relevant paperwork/timetables/whatever else.

You will be able to move into Halls on the weekend of the 24th/25th September, and this signals the start of Freshers Week/Fortnight - lectures will begin on Monday 3rd of October.

The University will probably send some form of correspondence to say when it would be best to move in - usually they say 'girls in the morning, boys in the afternoon' to ease congestion, but it doesn't seem to make much difference overall.
I've added a load of FAQs into the OP.

If you have any further important questions you think I may have missed off, or wish for me to clarify something, then please quote me and let me know. :h:

Q. Why haven't I received an accommodation offer yet, and how many do I receive?
A. Accommodation offers are processed all through the summer and offers are sent out in three 'batches', usually during August and the beginning of September. If you firmed Southampton on your application, you are guaranteed an offer of Halls accommodation, so don't panic!

Online the application should have a status e.g. mine at the moment states 'Submitted'. When it shows 'Processing' they will be reviewing your application and will make you an offer after that which you have 7 days to accept I believe? Anyway yea just wait
